{"id":110371,"date":"2026-06-29T13:10:04","date_gmt":"2026-06-29T07:40:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=110371"},"modified":"2026-06-29T14:43:22","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T09:13:22","slug":"gps-aided-geo-augmented-navigation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/gps-aided-geo-augmented-navigation\/","title":{"rendered":"GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, under the watch of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for the first time a private jet was landed by using GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation (GAGAN).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>Satellite Based Augmentation System<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SBAS) implemented jointly with <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/aai\/\" target=\"_blank\">Airport Authority of India (AAI)<\/a> and ISRO.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main objectives of GAGAN are<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To provide <\/span><b>Satellite-based Navigation services<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with accuracy and integrity required for civil aviation applications.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To provide better <\/span><b>Air Traffic Management<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over Indian Airspace.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>interoperable with other international SBAS systems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and provides seamless navigation across regional boundaries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">GAGAN operates through a combination of <strong>ground-based and space-based segments<\/strong> to enhance the accuracy and reliability of the GPS signals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Functioning of GAGAN<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ground\/Control Segment<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Reference Stations (INRES):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A network of <\/span><b>15 precisely surveyed ground reference stations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (INdian Reference Stations) is strategically placed across India. These stations collect GPS satellite data.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through this, errors caused by <\/span><b>ionospheric disturbances, satellite orbit errors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and inaccurate clocks are corrected.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Master Control Centre (INMCC):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The collected data is sent to the Indian Master Control Centre, where correction messages are generated to rectify any signal errors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Land Uplink Station (INLUS):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The correction messages are then uplinked through the Indian Land Uplink Station.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through this, the corrected messages are sent to the geostationary satellites which then broadcast them to the aircraft.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Space Segment<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This segment includes the communication satellites which were flown as <\/span><b>GSAT-8 in 2011, GSAT-10 in 2012 and GSAT-15<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2015.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These geostationary communication satellites carry the GAGAN payloads.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The correction messages are broadcast through these satellites to GPS receivers on aircraft.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>\u00a0Source:<\/b> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/science\/story\/gagan-india-satellite-landing-indigo-jet-udaipur-dgca-gps-science-news-2936175-2026-06-28\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">IT<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation is a Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) implemented jointly with Airport Authority of India (AAI) and ISRO.
