The report ranked India 94th out of 167 countries in the 2026 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index, marking India\u2019s highest-ever position since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About the Sustainable Development Report 2026<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Sustainable Development Report (SDR) 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the <\/span><b>11th edition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the annual global assessment that <\/span><b>evaluates countries\u2019 progress towards achieving the 2030 Agenda for <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/sustainable-development\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Sustainable Development<\/b><\/a><b> and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>published annually by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report <\/span><b>assesses the performance of 167 countries <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">using internationally comparable indicators across all 17 Sustainable Development Goals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It presents the <\/span><b>SDG Index and Dashboards<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which rank countries based on their overall progress towards achieving the SDGs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report identifies global, regional and national trends, highlights areas requiring urgent policy attention, and provides recommendations to accelerate SDG implementation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>2026 edition places special emphasis on the global implementation gap<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the world enters the final years of the 2030 Agenda, with fewer than four years remaining to achieve the SDGs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides the SDG Index, the report includes the <\/span><b>Index of Countries\u2019 Support to United Nations-based Multilateralism (UN-Mi)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which assesses countries\u2019 commitment to the United Nations system and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2026 report also <\/span><b>introduces two new global surveys<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that evaluate government efforts towards SDG implementation and public perceptions regarding SDG challenges and financing priorities across 127 countries.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Key Findings of the Sustainable Development Report 2026<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Sustainable Development Report 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> presents a mixed picture of global development, highlighting modest progress in some sectors while revealing that the world remains significantly off track to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Global Performance<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less than four years before the 2030 deadline, <\/span><b>only 16% of the Sustainable Development Goal targets are projected to be achieved globally.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>None of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals is currently on track to be fully achieved by 2030.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>East and South Asia <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have emerged as the <\/span><b>fastest-improving regions in SDG implementation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since 2015.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Finland<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> retained the <\/span><b>first position in the global SDG Index<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>followed by Sweden and Denmark.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even the highest-ranked countries continue to face major challenges in Responsible Consumption and Production, Climate Action, Life Below Water, and Life on Land due to unsustainable consumption patterns.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The greatest global implementation gaps remain in Sustainable Cities and Communities, Life Below Water, Life on Land, and Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sustainable agriculture, rising obesity, delays in administrative justice, declining press freedom and corruption remain among the weakest-performing global indicators.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Significant global progress has been recorded in electricity access, mobile broadband connectivity, internet usage, declining adolescent fertility rates and reduction in HIV infections.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 170 of the 193 United Nations Member States continued to support all United Nations General Assembly resolutions related to sustainable development during 2025, demonstrating continued global commitment to the SDGs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Barbados ranked first in commitment to United Nations-based multilateralism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while the United States ranked last after opposing the 2030 Agenda and withdrawing from several international organisations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report identifies <\/span><b>eight global priorities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including ending conflicts, increasing development financing, strengthening regional cooperation, reforming global governance and creating international frameworks for emerging technologies such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Artificial Intelligence<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/biotechnology\/\" target=\"_blank\">biotechnology<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>India\u2019s Performance<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India emerged as <\/span><b>one of the fastest-improving major economies in the Sustainable Development Goals Index,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> although significant structural challenges continue to limit its progress towards achieving the 2030 Agenda.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>India achieved its highest-ever ranking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by securing the <\/span><b>94th position among 167 countries <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with an overall <\/span><b>SDG score of 68.3 out of 100.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India improved 18 places between 2015 and 2026, making it <\/span><b>one of the fastest-improving major economies alongside China.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite this improvement, <\/span><b>India continues to rank behind Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka in South Asia.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Only 33.3% of India\u2019s SDG targets are expected to be achieved by 2030<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while 42.7% are progressing slowly and 24% have deteriorated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India faces major challenges in Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well-being, Gender Equality, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Life Below Water, Life on Land, and Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Zero Hunger remains India\u2019s biggest development challenge<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with high levels of child stunting, increasing child wasting, rising undernourishment and growing adult obesity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health outcomes continue to remain a concern due to increasing deaths from air pollution and non-communicable diseases.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India\u2019s performance under Climate Action has weakened because of rising carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels and cement production.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governance indicators continue to require improvement, particularly in areas related to institutional quality, corruption perception and press freedom.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has recorded notable progress in expanding electricity access, mobile broadband connectivity and internet penetration, strengthening digital inclusion and infrastructure development.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>report emphasises that India\u2019s progress is critical to global SDG achievement because improvements in the world\u2019s most populous country will significantly influence the success of the 2030 Agenda.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Why Does India\u2019s Performance Matter?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>India accounts for nearly one-sixth of the global population<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making its development trajectory central to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals worldwide. Faster progress in reducing poverty, improving nutrition, strengthening healthcare, promoting clean energy and ensuring climate resilience in India will have a decisive impact on global SDG outcomes. As one of the world\u2019s fastest-growing major economies, India\u2019s policy choices and development model will significantly shape the success of the global sustainable development agenda.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Sustainable Development Goals\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a universal development framework comprising <\/span><b>17 interconnected goals and 169 targets, adopted by all 193 <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/the-united-nations-un\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>United Nations<\/b><\/a><b> Member States in 2015 under the 2030 Agenda for <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/sustainable-development\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Sustainable Development<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The SDGs <\/span><b>aim to
