


{"id":111940,"date":"2026-07-08T11:24:01","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T05:54:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=111940"},"modified":"2026-07-08T11:24:01","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T05:54:01","slug":"char-kaman-restoration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/char-kaman-restoration\/","title":{"rendered":"Char Kaman Restoration: Reviving Hyderabad&#8217;s Historic Qutb Shahi Gateways"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Char Kaman Restoration Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Telangana government has announced that the <\/span><b>Char Kaman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 four ornamental gateways near Hyderabad&#8217;s Charminar \u2014 will soon undergo restoration.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project has received a major boost, with administrative sanction granted to invite tenders and appoint a consultant for the work.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What Is the Char Kaman<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Hyderabad&#8217;s Charminar is widely known as a symbol of the <\/span><b>Qutb Shahi dynasty&#8217;s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> architectural legacy, fewer people are aware of the <\/span><b>four ornamental gateways<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> surrounding it, collectively called the Char Kaman.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These arches once marked the entrances to the old city of Hyderabad.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basically, the Char Kaman public square enclosed by four large archways was built as a garden at the entry to the Qutb Shahi Palace complex to the north of the Charminar area with Dad Mahal inside the enclosure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Char-Su-Ka-Houz (tank of four directions) or Gulzar Houz was the freshwater fountain in the centre of this square.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The four Kamans are namely Kali Kaman to the east, Sher-e-Batil ki Kaman to the west, Machili Kaman to the north and Charminar Kaman to the south of Gulzar Houz.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are three floors on each end of the arch, originally constructed as chambers for royal guards.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Historical Background<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Charminar was built between 1589 and 1591 by <\/span><b>Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the fifth ruler of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/qutb-shahi-dynasty\/\" target=\"_blank\">Qutb Shahi dynasty<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Hyderabad historian Mohammed Safiullah, the Char Kaman were likely constructed a few years later, around 1594.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historian Syed Ali Asghar Bilgrami, in his 1927 book Landmarks of Deccan, notes that after completing the Charminar, Shah commissioned these four surrounding arches.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Original Names and Their Meanings<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The four gateways originally had different names from what they&#8217;re known by today:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>West Arch<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 <\/span><b>Daulat Khanae Ali<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Meant &#8220;the gate of the royal residence.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>East Arch<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 <\/span><b>Naqqar Khana<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Meant &#8220;gate of the palace where drums are beaten.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The central area enclosed by all four arches was called <\/span><b>Jilau Khana, or the royal vestibule<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>How the Present Names Came About<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>North Arch \u2014 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machli Kaman (Fish Arch): This arch was tall enough for &#8220;a huge elephant with a canopied litter&#8221; to pass through. It got its name because a large bamboo-and-paper fish, resembling a miniature aeroplane, was suspended at its centre every lunar new year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>South Arch<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 Charminar Kaman<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>East Arch<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 Kali Kaman (or Kaman of Shambhoo Pershad): Meaning the &#8220;black arch.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>West Arch<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 Kaman Sher Dil (or Sihr Batil): Meaning &#8220;gateway for the lion-hearted&#8221; or &#8220;magic breaker.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These names continue to be used in Hyderabad today. Historians also note that the Qutb Shahi palaces were originally located near the western arch, though these structures have since been lost to time.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Historical Role of the Gateways<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the Qutb Shahi period, the Char Kaman witnessed heavy traffic and served an important administrative function.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearby outhouses served as sitting areas for nobles and officials.
