Although Babur had defeated <\/span><b>Rana Sanga<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><b>1527<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, many Rajput chiefs continued to resist Mughal rule. Among them, Medini Rai, the ruler of Chanderi and a close ally of Rana Sanga, remained the most powerful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Medini Rai <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had earlier served in the <\/span><b>Malwa Sultanate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and later became its most influential noble. After the defeat at Khanwa, he returned to the strong <\/span><b>fort of Chanderi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and prepared to continue the struggle against <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/babur\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Babur<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Babur realised that lasting peace could not be achieved until the remaining Rajput strongholds were defeated. Therefore, he decided to capture Chanderi before another Rajput alliance could emerge.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Battle of Chanderi Causes\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Babur\u2019s decision to attack Chanderi was driven by military, political and strategic considerations.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>To strengthen Mughal rule<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Babur wanted to remove the remaining centres of resistance after Khanwa.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>To defeat Rana Sanga\u2019s allies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Medini Rai was one of Rana Sanga\u2019s strongest supporters. His defeat would weaken the Rajput Confederacy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Strategic importance of Chanderi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The fort controlled important routes between Malwa and Bundelkhand, making it valuable for both trade and military movement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Failure of peace talks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Babur offered to exchange Shamsabad Fort for Chanderi, but Medini Rai refused, leading to war.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Course of the Battle of Chanderi\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Babur reached Chanderi in January 1528 and first tried to settle the dispute peacefully. When Medini Rai rejected his proposal, Babur laid siege to the fort.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since Chanderi was built on a hill, attacking it was difficult. <\/span><b>Babur used gunpowder artillery and ordered raised platforms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to improve the range of his cannons.
