Project Tiger was initiated in <\/span><b>1973<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the programme has become one of the world&#8217;s most successful species conservation initiatives by combining habitat protection, anti-poaching measures, scientific monitoring, community participation, and ecosystem management.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is Project Tiger?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project Tiger is a flagship wildlife conservation programme launched by the Government of India on <\/span><b>1 April 1973<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to protect the endangered Bengal tiger and its natural habitats. It aims to ensure a viable population of tigers through habitat conservation, anti-poaching measures, and scientific management. The programme is implemented by the <\/span><b>National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Project Tiger History<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project Tiger was launched in <\/span><b>1973<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in response to the alarming decline in India&#8217;s tiger population, with the aim of ensuring the long-term survival of tigers through scientific conservation and habitat protection.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the beginning of the 20th century, India&#8217;s tiger population was estimated at <\/span><b>20,000-40,000<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid hunting, poaching, habitat destruction, and deforestation caused a sharp decline in tiger numbers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>first nationwide tiger census (1972)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> estimated only <\/span><b>1,827 tigers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> remained in the wild.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span Strategy<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Core-Buffer Strategy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the cornerstone of Project Tiger and is designed to balance wildlife conservation with sustainable human development. Under this approach, every Tiger Reserve is divided into two management zones, a <\/span><b>Core Zone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for strict protection and a <\/span><b>Buffer Zone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for conservation-oriented human activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Core Zone (Critical Tiger Habitat)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Core Zone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the innermost and most ecologically important part of a Tiger Reserve. It is kept free from human disturbances to provide a secure habitat for tigers and other wildlife.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight:
