reported Iran to the UN Security Council for the first time in 20 years recently.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About International Atomic Energy Agency\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the world\u2019s leading i<\/span><b>ntergovernmental organisation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for<\/span><b> scientific and technical cooperation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the<\/span><b> nuclear field.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Agency\u2019s <\/span><b>genesis <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was<\/span><b> U.S. President Eisenhower\u2019s \u201cAtoms for Peace\u201d address<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the\u00a0 <\/span><b>United Nations General Assembly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (UNGA) on 8 December <\/span><b>1953<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>IAEA Statute<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was approved on 23 October 1956 and came into force on 29 July <\/span><b>1957<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an <\/span><b>autonomous organization <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">within the <\/span><b>United Nations system.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>reports <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to both the <\/span><b>UNGA and the UN Security Council.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its <\/span><b>primary goa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l is to <\/span><b>ensure that nuclear energy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b>not diverted for weapons purposes.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IAEA works with its Member States and multiple partners worldwide to promote the <\/span><b>safe, secure, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>peaceful use of nuclear technologies.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">widely known as the<\/span><b> world\u2019s \u201cAtoms for Peace and Development\u201d\u200b organization.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Member Countries:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The agency currently has <\/span><b>180 member states,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reflecting its wide international mandate and credibility.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IAEA is <\/span><b>headquartered <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in <\/span><b>Vienna, Austria, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and has regional and liaison offices in Toronto, Tokyo, New York, and Geneva.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>International Atomic Energy Agency <\/b><b>Functions<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Promoting Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IAEA encourages the use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, emphasizing sustainability and safety.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Safety and Security:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The agency<\/span><b> establishes safety standards <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and provides assistance to ensure that nuclear operations are conducted safely and securely.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Verification: T<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he IAEA <\/span><b>conducts inspections<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and monitoring to verify compliance with nuclear non-proliferation agreements.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>IAEA <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is <\/span><b>not a party to the <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treaty on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-irans-withdrawal-from-the-npt-could-mean-for-global-nuclear-stability\/\" target=\"_blank\">Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (<\/a><\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-irans-withdrawal-from-the-npt-could-mean-for-global-nuclear-stability\/\" target=\"_blank\">NPT) <\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but is <\/span><b>entrusted with a key verification role under it.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>As part of the NPT<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><b> all non-nuclear powers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are <\/span><b>required to negotiate a safeguards agreement with the IAEA<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; as part of that agreement, the <\/span><b>IAEA <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is given <\/span><b>authority to monitor nuclear programs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and to <\/span><b>inspect nuclear facilities.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IAEA has <\/span><b>no power to force the cooperation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of its member states; however, each state can choose to follow or ignore the guidelines set by the IAEA.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>International Atomic Energy Agency <\/b><b>Governance Structure<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>General Conference:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The General Conference, composed of all member states, <\/span><b>meets annually<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to approve budgets and <\/span><b>set general policy directions.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Board of Governors:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Board of Governors, comprising <\/span><b>35 members,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> meets about five times a year to: approve safeguards agreements, carry out statutory functions, and appoint the Director General.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Secretariat:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Secretariat,
