


{"id":112618,"date":"2026-07-11T13:29:57","date_gmt":"2026-07-11T07:59:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=112618"},"modified":"2026-07-11T13:29:57","modified_gmt":"2026-07-11T07:59:57","slug":"pratapgad-fort","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/pratapgad-fort\/","title":{"rendered":"Pratapgad Fort"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Pratapgad Fort Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A memorial of \u2018Veer\u2019 Jivaji Mahale will be constructed on the foothills of Pratapgad Fort, and Rs 1 crore has been sanctioned by the Maharashtra Government for the first phase of the project recently.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Pratapgad Fort<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pratapgad, also known as <\/span><b>Pratapgarh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a large <\/span><b>hill fort<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> located in the Satara district of <\/span><b>Maharashtra<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fort lies at an altitude of 1080 m and is <\/span><b>built on a spur <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that <\/span><b>overlooks the road between <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>villages of Par and Kinesvar.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Pratapgad Fort <\/b><b>History<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maratha king <\/span><b>Shivaji Maharaj <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had<\/span><b> commissioned Moropant Pingle,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> his prime minister<\/span><b>, to commence the construction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of this fort to <\/span><b>defend Nira and the Koyna River banks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and also to<\/span><b> guard the Par pass.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The construction of the fortress was <\/span><b>completed <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the year <\/span><b>1656<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fort stands as the witness of the historic<\/span><b> Battle of Pratapgarh between Shivaji and Afzal Khan,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>commander of the Bijapur Sultanate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on 10th November <\/span><b>1659<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Battle of Pratapgad marked the <\/span><b>rise of Shivaji Maharaj<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a powerful and independent ruler in the Deccan region.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also marked the <\/span><b>decline of the Bijapur Sultanate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which eventually fell to the Mughals in 1686.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>After the Battle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Pratapgad, the<\/span><b> Afzal Tower <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was <\/span><b>constructed <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outside the fort as a lookout for enemies.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is said that <\/span><b>Afzal Khan&#8217;s head is buried under the Afzal tower<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is also known as<\/span><b> Afzal Buruj.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Afzal Khan&#8217;s tomb is situated to the northwest of Afzal Buruj.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>In 1818,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the<\/span><b> Maratha forces <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had to<\/span><b> surrender the Pratapgad Fort after losing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>third Anglo-Maratha War.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Pratapgad Fort <\/b><b>Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fort is divided into two parts, the <\/span><b>lower fort<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>upper fort<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>upper fort<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was built<\/span><b> upon the crest of the hill.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is roughly square, 180 m long on each side.
