{"id":11262,"date":"2023-05-31T01:16:27","date_gmt":"2023-05-30T19:46:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=11262"},"modified":"2025-03-30T01:32:46","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T20:02:46","slug":"what-is-stolpersteine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-stolpersteine\/","title":{"rendered":"What is \u2018Stolpersteine\u2019?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Stolpersteine:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Stolperstein are <strong>small, brass memorials<\/strong> <strong>placed<\/strong> <strong>in the pavements of cities across Europe<\/strong> to <strong>commemorate victims of Nazi persecution.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The Stolpersteine are a project <strong>initiated by German artist Gunter Demnig since 1992<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>These <strong>small stones<\/strong> serve as a <strong>reminder of the atrocities committed during the Holocaust<\/strong> and the countless lives that were lost.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Stolperstein&#8221; is a <strong>German word meaning, literally, &#8220;stumbling stone<\/strong>,&#8221; or, metaphorically, &#8220;stumbling block.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>first Stolperstein<\/strong> was <strong>placed on 16 December 1992<\/strong>, a date which <strong>marked 50 years since an order<\/strong> was signed to begin the <strong>mass deportation of Jewish people and Roma from Germany.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Each of the brass plaques embedded in pavements recalls the fate of a person<\/strong> who was persecuted by the Nazis, deported, murdered or driven to suicide.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unlike some other memorials<\/strong> that focus on specific persecuted groups, the <strong>Stolpersteine honour all victims of the Nazi regime<\/strong>, including Jewish, Sinti, Roma, disabled, dissident, and Afro-German and \u201casocial\u201d citizens.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>inscription on each stone begins \u201cHere lived\u201d, followed by the victim\u2019s name, date of birth, and fate: <\/strong>internment, suicide, exile or, in the vast majority of cases, deportation and murder.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Each Stolperstein is individually funded <\/strong>and can be sponsored by private individuals, schools or and organisations.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is the <strong>largest decentralized Holocaust memorial in the world.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is the Holocaust?<\/h3>\n<p>In the course of the Second World War, the Nazis murdered nearly six million European Jews.
