{"id":11266,"date":"2023-05-31T09:07:52","date_gmt":"2023-05-31T03:37:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=11266"},"modified":"2025-03-30T01:34:05","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T20:04:05","slug":"what-is-global-greenhouse-gas-watch-gggw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-global-greenhouse-gas-watch-gggw\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Global Greenhouse Gas Watch (GGGW)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Global Greenhouse Gas Watch (GGGW):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>new greenhouse gas (GHG) monitoring initiative<\/strong> of the <strong>World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>GGGW will <strong>fill critical information gaps, providing an integrated, operational framework<\/strong> <strong>under all space-based and surface-based observing systems under one roof<\/strong>, along with modelling and data assimilation capabilities.<\/li>\n<li>It will <strong>build on WMO\u2019s experience in coordinating international collaboration<\/strong> <strong>in predicting the weather and analysing climate<\/strong> on long-standing activities in greenhouse gas monitoring and research under the guidance of the Global Atmosphere Watch, established in 1989.<\/li>\n<li>GGW <strong>predicts a top-down approach to the flux evaluation,<\/strong> which <strong>builds on existing capabilities<\/strong> in surface- and space-based observations and modelling, ensuring the timely exchange of all observations and data.<\/li>\n<li>The GGGW will <strong>consist of four main components:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Comprehensive, sustained, global surface- and satellite-based observations<\/strong> of CO2, methane, and nitrous oxide concentrations, partial column amounts, total column amounts, vertical profiles, and fluxes supporting oceanic, meteorological, and terrestrial variables, internationally exchanged as rapidly as possible.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prior estimates of the GHG emissions based on the activity data<\/strong> and process-based models.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Global high-resolution Earth system models<\/strong> representing GHG cycles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Data assimilation systems<\/strong> combining the observations with model calculations to generate products of higher accuracy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Key facts about World Meteorological Organisation (WMO):<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>specialized agency of the United Nations (UN).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is the <strong>UN system&#8217;s authoritative voice on<\/strong> the state and behavior of the <strong>Earth&#8217;s atmosphere,<\/strong> its interaction with the oceans, the climate it produces, and the resulting distribution of water resources.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>originated from the International Meteorological Organization (IMO),<\/strong> which was <strong>founded in 1873.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Established in 1950, WMO <strong>became the specialized agency of the UN for meteorology<\/strong> (weather and climate), <strong>operational hydrology and related geophysical sciences.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Headquarters<\/strong>:\u00a0 <strong>Geneva<\/strong>, Switzerland.<\/li>\n<li>Currently it has a <strong>membership of 187 countries.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Governance Structure:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Its <strong>supreme body is the World Meteorological Congress<\/strong>, which consists of representatives of all members. They let sunlight pass through the atmosphere, but they prevent the heat that the sunlight brings from leaving the atmosphere.
