The battle was fought to defend the independent Bundela kingdom of Maharaja Chhatrasal from Mughal aggression. The Maratha victory not only preserved Bundelkhand\u2019s independence but also established Maratha influence in central and northern India.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Battle of Bundelkhand Background<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Chhatrasal Bundela <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was a <\/span><b>Bundela Rajput warrior and ruler who established an independent kingdom in Bundelkhand <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after rebelling against Mughal authority <\/span><b>during Aurangzeb\u2019s reign<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Through years of resistance, he built a powerful regional state and became one of the prominent rulers challenging Mughal control in central India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, by the <\/span><b>late 1720s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Chhatrasal had grown old <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and his ability to personally lead military campaigns had declined. Taking advantage of this situation, <\/span><b>Muhammad Khan Bangash, the Mughal governor of Allahabad, invaded Bundelkhand in 1728 CE to restore Mughal control over the region.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bangash defeated Chhatrasal\u2019s forces and laid siege to his territory, creating a serious threat to the survival of the Bundela kingdom. <\/span><b>Unable to resist the Mughal offensive alone, Chhatrasal sought help from Peshwa Baji Rao I, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who was expanding Maratha influence into Malwa and central India.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baji Rao\u2019s intervention transformed the conflict into a larger struggle between the declining <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/mughal-empire\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Mughal Empire<\/strong><\/a> and the rising Maratha power. The Maratha support helped Chhatrasal regain control of his kingdom and strengthened Maratha influence in northern India.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Battle of Bundelkhand Causes\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conflict arose due to Mughal attempts to restore their authority over Bundelkhand.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mughal Expansion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Muhammad Khan Bangash, the Mughal governor of Allahabad, invaded Bundelkhand in 1728 to bring Chhatrasal\u2019s kingdom back under Mughal control.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Weak Position of Chhatrasal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Chhatrasal suffered several defeats, was besieged by Bangash and was eventually captured.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Appeal to Baji Rao I<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> : Unable to resist alone, Chhatrasal requested military assistance from Peshwa Baji Rao I, comparing his situation to the Gajendra Moksha episode from Hindu mythology.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Maratha Interests<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Helping Chhatrasal offered the Marathas an opportunity to expand their political influence beyond the Deccan.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Course of the Battle of Bundelkhand\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After receiving Chhatrasal\u2019s appeal, Baji Rao I marched rapidly towards Bundelkhand through an unexpected eastern route, taking the Mughal forces by surprise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>decisive battle took place at Jaitpur in March 1729.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Instead of launching a direct assault, Baji Rao surrounded the Mughal army and cut off its supply lines and communications with Delhi and Allahabad. Bangash attempted to break the siege but failed. His son Qaim Khan, who arrived with reinforcements, was also defeated by the Marathas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facing starvation and complete encirclement, <\/span><b>Muhammad Khan Bangash accepted defeat and agreed to withdraw from Bundelkhand.
