News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wildlife experts from around the world are meeting in Geneva, Switzerland for the 34th meeting of the Animals Committee of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CITES was adopted in 1973 and <\/span><b>entered into force in 1975.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CITES is a global agreement <\/span><b>between 185 Parties<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (184 countries and the European Union) that regulates international trade in wild animals and plants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It aims to <\/span><b>ensure that international trade<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in wild animals and plants is legal, sustainable and traceable, and <\/span><b>does not threaten the survival of the species in the wild.<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Functions<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CITES regulates <\/span><b>international trade in specimens of species<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of wild animals and plants based on a system of permits and certificates issued under certain conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>covers export, re-export, import<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and landing from the <\/span><b>high seas of live and dead animals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>plants and their parts and derivatives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including <\/span><b>any processed products.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although <\/span><b>CITES is legally binding<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the Parties \u2013 in other words, they have to implement the Convention\u2013it <\/span><b>does not take the place of national laws.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>CITES Secretariat:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Geneva, Switzerland (administered by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/united-nations-environment-programme-unep\/\" target=\"_blank\">United Nations Environment Programme<\/a><\/strong> )<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Representatives of <\/span><b>CITES nations meet every two<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to three years at a Conference of the Parties (or COP) to review progress and adjust the lists of protected species, which are grouped into <\/span><b>three categories with different levels of protection<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Appendix I<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It includes <\/span><b>species threatened with extinction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and provides the <\/span><b>greatest level of protection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including a prohibition on commercial trade.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Appendix II<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It includes species that are <\/span><b>not currently threatened<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with extinction <\/span><b>but may become so without trade controls.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regulated trade is allowed if the exporting country issues a permit based on findings that the specimens were legally acquired and the trade will not be detrimental to the survival of the species or its role in the ecosystem.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Appendix III<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It includes species for which a <\/span><b>country has asked other CITES parties to help control international trade.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trade in Appendix III species is regulated <\/span><b>using CITES export permits<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (issued by the country that listed the species in Appendix III) and certificates of origin (issued by all other countries).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Countries may list species for which they have domestic regulations in Appendix III at any time.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a
