The reserve is <\/span><b>recognised under UNESCO\u2019s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>includes the Nanda Devi National Park and the Valley of Flowers National Park<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both of which are designated as <\/span><b>UNESCO World Heritage Sites.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve Location<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve is <\/span><b>situated in the Western Himalayas of Uttarakhand.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It extends across the <\/span><b>Chamoli, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reserve <\/span><b>surrounds Nanda Devi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>India\u2019s second-highest mountain.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It lies within the upper catchments of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/alakananda-river\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Alaknanda River<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reserve comprises a <\/span><b>Core Zone, Buffer Zone and Transition Zone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, following the <\/span><b>UNESCO Biosphere Reserve<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> model.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve Geographical Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve exhibits the characteristic features of a high-altitude Himalayan ecosystem.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It consists of <\/span><b>rugged mountain ranges, deep gorges, glaciers and snow-covered peaks.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elevation ranges from about 1,800 metres to over 7,800 metres, resulting in <\/span><b>diverse climatic and ecological conditions.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Nanda Devi Sanctuary<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, enclosed by high mountain peaks, forms a unique natural basin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Numerous <\/span><b>glaciers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including the Uttari Rishi, Dakshini Rishi, Trisul and Ramani glaciers, occur within the reserve.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Alpine meadows (Bugyals)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, temperate forests and sub-alpine vegetation dominate the landscape.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve Drainage System<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve plays an important role in the <\/span><b>Himalayan river system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Rishi Ganga River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> originates from the glaciers within the Nanda Devi Sanctuary.
