Covering about 1.3 million sq. km, it <\/span><b>extends across southern Mongolia and northern China<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Unlike typical hot deserts, the Gobi is dominated by rocky plains, gravel-covered surfaces and barren landscapes rather than vast sand dunes. It was formed mainly due to the combined effects of continentality and the rain-shadow effect of the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau. The desert is globally important for its unique biodiversity, rich dinosaur fossil deposits, mineral resources and its role as a major source of dust storms in East Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Gobi Desert Location<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gobi Desert is <\/span><b>located in East Asia <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>extends across southern Mongolia and northern China.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>lies in the interior of the Asian continent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and forms part of the <\/span><b>temperate desert biome.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It stretches from the <\/span><b>Tien Shan Mountains<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the west to the <\/span><b>Greater Khingan Mountains<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the east.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/altai-mountains\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Altai Mountains<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>Mongolian Plateau<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lie to its north, while the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/tibetan-plateau\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Tibetan Plateau<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> forms its southern boundary.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Gobi Desert Formation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Gobi Desert <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was formed due to a combination of its <\/span><b>continental location <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the <\/span><b>rain-shadow effect <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">created by surrounding mountain ranges. These factors prevent adequate moisture from reaching the region, resulting in an extremely dry climate.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rain-shadow Effect<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau block moisture-laden monsoon winds from the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/indian-ocean\/\" target=\"_blank\">Indian Ocean<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As the winds lose most of their moisture on the southern slopes of these mountains, very little rainfall reaches the Gobi Desert.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Continental Location<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The Gobi lies deep inside the Asian continent, far from major oceans. By the time air masses reach the region, they have already lost much of their moisture, resulting in very low precipitation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>High Evaporation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Although the region receives limited rainfall, low humidity, strong winds and dry air increase moisture loss, making the landscape even more arid.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to these combined factors, the Gobi receives less than 200 mm of annual rainfall, preventing the growth of dense vegetation and maintaining its cold desert environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Gobi Desert Geographical Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gobi Desert exhibits several distinctive physical features that reflect its unique cold desert environment and geological history.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Predominantly Rocky Landscape<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Unlike many deserts, the Gobi is mainly covered by rocky plains, gravel-covered surfaces and barren plateaus, while sand dunes occupy only a small part of the desert.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Varied Relief<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The landscape includes mountain ranges, broad basins, dry valleys, escarpments and isolated hills, giving the region a diverse topography.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cold Desert Environment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The desert remains largely barren because of low rainfall, extreme temperatures and sparse vegetation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rich Fossil Deposits<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The Gobi is internationally renowned for its dinosaur fossils and fossilised eggs. The Flaming Cliffs (Bayanzag) are among the world\u2019s most important palaeontological sites.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Active Geomorphological Processes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Strong winds continuously shape the landscape through weathering, erosion and the movement of sand and dust, creating unique desert landforms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Harsh Physical Conditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Low humidity, strong winds, frequent dust storms and large differences between day and night temperatures make it one of the most challenging environments for life.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Gobi Desert Climate<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gobi Desert experiences an extreme continental climate with large seasonal and daily variations in temperature.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winters are long and extremely cold, while summers are short and warm.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winter temperatures may fall below \u201340\u00b0C, whereas summer temperatures can exceed 40\u00b0C.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annual rainfall is generally less than 200 mm, with most of it occurring during summer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strong winds frequently produce dust storms, especially during spring.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low humidity and high evaporation make the region highly arid.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Gobi Desert Drainage System<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gobi Desert has a poorly developed drainage system because of its dry climate.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most rivers are seasonal and flow only after rainfall or snowmelt.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water is mainly available through springs, oases and temporary lakes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many streams end in inland (endorheic) basins without reaching the sea.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Groundwater is an important source of water for local communities and wildlife.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Gobi Desert Flora<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vegetation of the Gobi Desert is sparse and well adapted to its cold and arid environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is dominated by <\/span><b>drought-resistant shrubs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>hardy grasses and low-growing bushes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can survive with very little rainfall.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Saxaul<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the most characteristic plant of the Gobi Desert and plays an important role in stabilising soil and preventing desertification.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many plants have <\/span><b>deep root systems, small leaves or waxy surfaces<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reduce water loss and withstand strong winds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vegetation is relatively <\/span><b>denser around oases, river valleys and seasonal water sources.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During occasional rainfall, <\/span><b>short-lived grasses and wildflowers bloom briefly,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> providing food for grazing animals.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Gobi Desert Fauna<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite its harsh extreme temperatures and limited water availability.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Gobi Desert Importance<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond its distinctive physical features, the Gobi Desert holds immense ecological, scientific and economic importance.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>contains some of the world\u2019s richest dinosaur fossil deposits<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, providing valuable insights into prehistoric life and the evolution of reptiles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The desert is <\/span><b>rich in coal, copper, gold and rare earth elements<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it an important mining region in Mongolia and China.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its vast open landscapes and high solar radiation provide significant <\/span><b>potential for solar and wind energy development.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dust storms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> originating from the Gobi transport fine mineral particles over long distances, influencing air quality, weather patterns and nutrient cycles across East Asia and the North Pacific.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>supports the traditional nomadic pastoral lifestyle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with camel, sheep and goat rearing forming an important source of livelihood.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gobi also serves as an important <\/span><b>natural laboratory for studying desertification, climate change, arid-land ecology and the adaptation of plants and animals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to extreme environments.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Gobi Desert Climate Change Concerns<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate change and human activities are increasing environmental pressure on the Gobi Desert.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rising temperatures are accelerating the expansion of desert areas into neighbouring grasslands.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overgrazing has reduced vegetation cover, leading to greater soil erosion and land degradation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dust storms are becoming more frequent and are affecting air quality in China, Mongolia, the Korean Peninsula and Japan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing evaporation and changing rainfall patterns are worsening water scarcity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mining and infrastructure
