The river plunges from a height of about <\/span><b>253 metres (830 feet)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, creating one of India\u2019s most spectacular waterfalls, especially during the southwest monsoon. Also known as <\/span><b>Gersoppa Falls<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Jog Falls is an excellent example of river erosion in the Western Ghats and is closely associated with the Sharavathi Hydroelectric Project, one of India\u2019s earliest major hydroelectric projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Jog Falls Location<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jog Falls is located in <\/span><b>Shivamogga district of Karnataka.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is formed by the <\/span><b>Sharavathi River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one of the major west-flowing rivers of Peninsular India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The waterfall lies near Sagara town in the central <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/western-ghats\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Western Ghats<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is situated <\/span><b>along the western escarpment of the Western Ghats<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where the elevated plateau descends sharply towards the Kanara (Karavali) Coast.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The surrounding region forms part of the <\/span><b>Sharavathi Valley<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, known for its evergreen forests and rich biodiversity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Jog Falls Formation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Jog Falls <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was formed by the combined action of <\/span><b>tectonic uplift and river erosion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Sharavathi River flows westwards from the Mysore (Deccan) Plateau towards the Arabian Sea. On reaching the steep western edge of the Western Ghats, the river suddenly drops about 253 metres, forming a <\/span><b>plunge waterfall<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Over thousands of years, the force of the falling water eroded the rocks at the base, creating a deep gorge, while the hard rocks of the Western Ghats helped preserve the steep cliff. This combination of a sharp escarpment and continuous river erosion gave rise to Jog Falls.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Jog Falls Geographical Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Jog Falls <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exhibits several distinctive physical characteristics that make it one of India\u2019s most remarkable waterfalls.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has a vertical drop of about 253 metres, making it <\/span><b>the second highest plunge <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/waterfalls-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">waterfall in India<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The waterfall is divided into four distinct streams &#8211; <\/span><b>Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, each displaying a unique pattern of descent.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is carved into the hard crystalline rocks of the Western Ghats, forming a steep cliff and a deep rocky gorge.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The surrounding landscape consists of rugged hills, dense evergreen forests and narrow valleys typical of the Western Ghats.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seasonal variations in rainfall cause significant changes in the volume and appearance of the waterfall.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>River and Hydroelectric Significance<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Jog Falls<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is closely associated with the <\/span><b>Sharavathi River Basin <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and hydroelectric power generation in Karnataka.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Sharavathi River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> originates near Ambutirtha in Shivamogga district and drains into the Arabian Sea near Honnavar.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Mahatma Gandhi Hydroelectric Station<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, commissioned in 1948, was among India\u2019s earliest major hydroelectric power stations and utilised the river\u2019s steep gradient near Jog Falls.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Linganamakki Dam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, constructed upstream in the 1960s, created a large reservoir that supplies water to the Sharavathi Hydroelectric Project, one of Karnataka\u2019s largest hydroelectric power stations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, water releases from the reservoir regulate the discharge over Jog Falls during the non-monsoon months, while the waterfall reaches its peak flow during the southwest monsoon.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jog Falls is India&#8217;s second-highest plunge waterfall on the Sharavathi River.
