


{"id":11362,"date":"2024-10-02T02:10:25","date_gmt":"2024-10-01T20:40:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=11362"},"modified":"2025-10-04T11:19:24","modified_gmt":"2025-10-04T05:49:24","slug":"what-is-higgs-boson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-higgs-boson\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Higgs Boson?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Higgs Boson<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Higgs boson is the <strong>fundamental force-carrying particle of<\/strong> the <strong>Higgs field<\/strong>, which is <strong>responsible for granting fundamental particles their mass<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>This field was first proposed in the mid-sixties by <strong>Peter Higgs<\/strong>, for whom the particle is named.<\/li>\n<li>The particle was finally <strong>discovered on<\/strong> July 4, <strong>2012, by researchers at<\/strong> the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/large-hadron-collider\/\" target=\"_blank\">Large Hadron Collider (LHC)<\/a>, the most powerful particle accelerator in the world, located at the European particle physics laboratory CERN, Switzerland.<\/li>\n<li>The LHC confirmed the existence of the Higgs field and the mechanism that gives rise to mass and thus completed the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/standard-model-of-particle-physics\/\" target=\"_blank\">standard model of particle physics<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>one of the 17 elementary particles that make up<\/strong> the <strong>Standard Model<\/strong> of particle physics, which is scientists&#8217; <strong>best theory about<\/strong> the behaviors of the <strong>universe&#8217;s <\/strong>most <strong>basic building blocks.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Higgs boson plays such a fundamental role in subatomic physics that it is sometimes <strong>referred to as the &#8220;God particle.&#8221;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Features:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The Higgs boson has a <strong>mass of 125 billion electron volts<\/strong>, meaning it is <strong>130 times <\/strong>more <strong>massive than a proton.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is also <strong>chargeless with zero spin, <\/strong>a quantum mechanical equivalent to angular momentum.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is the <strong>only elementary particle with no spin<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>What is a Boson?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>A boson is a &#8220;<strong>force carrier&#8221; particle<\/strong> that comes into play <strong>when particles interact<\/strong> with each other, with a <strong>boson exchanged<\/strong> during this interaction. For example, <strong>when two electrons interact,<\/strong> they <strong>exchange a photon<\/strong>, the force-carrying particle of electromagnetic fields.<\/li>\n<li>Because quantum field theory describes the microscopic world and the quantum fields that fill the universe with wave mechanics, a boson can <strong>also be described as a wave in a field.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>So, a photon<\/strong> is a particle and a wave that <strong>arises from an excited electromagnetic field,<\/strong> and the <strong>Higgs boson<\/strong> is the particle or &#8220;quantized manifestation&#8221; that <strong>arises from the Higgs field when excited<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>That field generates mass via its interaction with other particles,<\/strong> and the mechanism carried by the Higgs boson called the <strong>Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Particles that interact<\/strong> \u2014 or &#8220;couple&#8221; \u2014 with the Higgs field<strong> more strongly<\/strong> are granted <strong>greater masses.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Even the <strong>Higgs boson itself gets its massfrom<\/strong> its own <strong>interaction with the Higgs field.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>One particle not granted massby the Higgs fieldis<\/strong> the basic particle of light, <strong>the photon.<\/strong> This is because spontaneous symmetry breaking doesn&#8217;t happen for photons as it does for its fellow force-carrying particles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This mass-granting phenomenon also on<strong>ly applies to fundamental particles <\/strong>like <strong>electrons and quarks.<\/strong> Particles like protons, made up of quarks, get most of their mass from the binding energy that holds their constituents together.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What are Quarks?<\/h3>\n<p>A quark is one of the fundamental particles in physics. They join to form hadrons, such as protons and neutrons, which are components of the nuclei of atoms.
