It eventually became the genesis of the Maratha Empire.<\/li>\n<li>He was <strong>known as the Father of Indian Navy<\/strong>, Shivaji was the <strong>first to realise the importance of having a naval force,<\/strong> and therefore he strategically <strong>established a navy and forts at the coastline<\/strong> to defend the Konkan side of Maharashtra.<\/li>\n<li>He <strong>was a secular ruler<\/strong> who was very accommodating of all religions. He <strong>had numerous Muslim soldiers<\/strong> in his army.<\/li>\n<li>Shivaji was a <strong>dependable supporter of women and their honour<\/strong>. Anyone under his rule caught <strong>violating woman&#8217;s rights was severely punished.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>He <strong>had a council of ministers (Asht Pradhan)<\/strong> <strong>to advise him<\/strong> on the matters of the state <strong>but he was not bound by it.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>He <strong>was called as the &#8216;Mountain Rat&#8217; and was widely known for his guerrilla warfare tactics<\/strong>. He was called so because of his awareness in geography of his land, and guerrilla tactics like raiding, ambushing and surprise attacks on his enemies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Key facts about Raigad fort:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>hill fort<\/strong> situated in <strong>Raigad district, Maharashtra.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is situated in the <strong>Sahyadri mountain ranges<\/strong> or the western ghats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>one of the strongest-ever fortresses of the Deccan Plateau<\/strong> and is <strong>known as the \u2018Gibraltar of the East\u2019 <\/strong>across the world.<\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>seized by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1656 from Chandraraoji More<\/strong>, the King of Jawali.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Several structures and other constructions in Raigad <strong>were developed by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>He <strong>made this his capital in 1674<\/strong>, <strong>after being crowned as the king of the entire Maratha<\/strong> <strong>Kingdom<\/strong> and later on, the Maratha Empire.<\/li>\n<li>The fort <strong>was the location for an armed campaign executed by the British East India Company in 1765.<\/strong> On May 9, 1818, the fort was looted and subsequently destroyed by British forces.<\/li>\n<li>The fort also<strong> overlooks an artificial lake known as the \u2018Ganga Sagar Lake\u2019.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0Who was Ashta Pradhan?<\/h3>\n<p>The Ashta Pradhan (also termed Asta Pradhan or the Council of 8) was a council of eight ministers that administered the Maratha empire.
