The Mahadayi River <\/span><b>originates in the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bhimgad-wildlife-sanctuary\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary<\/b><\/a><b> in Karnataka and flows westwards towards the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/arabian-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Arabian Sea<\/b><\/a><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the river reaches the steep western escarpment of the Western Ghats, it encounters a sharp change in elevation and plunges over resistant crystalline rocks, forming a tiered plunge waterfall. Over thousands of years, continuous river erosion has deepened the gorge, while the resistant rocks have preserved the steep cliff and the waterfall\u2019s distinctive four-tiered structure.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Dudhsagar Falls Geographical Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dudhsagar Falls possesses several distinctive geographical characteristics.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has a total <\/span><b>height<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><b>about 310 metres<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it one of the highest waterfalls in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The waterfall descends through four distinct tiers, creating a spectacular cascade during the southwest monsoon.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is formed by the <\/span><b>Mahadayi-Mandovi river system,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> one of the major west-flowing river systems of the Western Ghats.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The surrounding landscape consists of rugged hills, deep valleys, dense evergreen forests and rocky escarpments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavy monsoon rainfall significantly increases the discharge of the river, giving the waterfall its characteristic milky-white appearance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>River Significance<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dudhsagar Falls forms part of the Mahadayi-Mandovi River Basin, an important west-flowing river system of the Western Ghats.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The river originates in the Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka as the Mahadayi River and is known as the Mandovi River after entering Goa.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It flows westwards across Goa before draining into the Arabian Sea near Panaji.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The river supports drinking water supply, irrigation, inland navigation and estuarine ecosystems in Goa.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The river is associated with the Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal (MWDT), which adjudicated the interstate water-sharing dispute involving Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dispute centres on Karnataka\u2019s Kalasa-Banduri Nala Project, which proposes diverting water from the Mahadayi basin to the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/malaprabha-river\/\" target=\"_blank\">Malaprabha River<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a tributary of the Krishna River) for drinking water supply.
