The waterfall descends about 297 metres (975 feet) in a spectacular single drop, making it one of the most prominent geomorphological features of southern India.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Thalaiyar Falls Location<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thalaiyar Falls is <\/span><b>located in the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/palani-hills\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Palani Hills<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It lies in the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/western-ghats\/\" target=\"_blank\">Western Ghats<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one of the major mountain systems of Peninsular India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is situated in a rugged, mountainous region and is best viewed from Dum Dum Rock on the Batlagundu-Kodaikanal Ghat Road.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Thalaiyar Falls Formation<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thalaiyar Falls is formed where the <\/span><b>Manjalar River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> flows down from the elevated Palani Hills and encounters a steep escarpment. The sudden change in elevation causes the river to descend almost vertically, forming a high waterfall. Over a long period, continuous river erosion has shaped the steep cliff and the valley below.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Thalaiyar Falls Geographical Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thalaiyar Falls has a single vertical drop of <\/span><b>about 297 metres (975 feet)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it the highest waterfall in Tamil Nadu.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>horsetail waterfall<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in which the water maintains contact with the rock face during most of its descent.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The waterfall is situated amidst the steep valleys and evergreen forests of the Palani Hills in the Western Ghats.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its flow is <\/span><b>seasonal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with maximum discharge during the <\/span><b>Southwest and Northeast Monsoon seasons.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Thalaiyar Falls Ecological Significance<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thalaiyar Falls is <\/span><b>formed by the Manjalar River, a tributary of the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/vaigai-river\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Vaigai River<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Downstream, the river feeds the Manjalar Dam, which provides irrigation to parts of southern Tamil Nadu.
