{"id":11382,"date":"2023-05-29T04:11:31","date_gmt":"2023-05-28T22:41:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=11382"},"modified":"2025-03-30T02:15:48","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T20:45:48","slug":"what-is-powassan-virus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-powassan-virus\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Powassan Virus?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Powassan Virus Disease:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a rare, yet often serious disease that is <strong>spread by the bite of infected ticks<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Powassan virus<\/strong>, often <strong>called a ticking time bomb<\/strong>, is <strong>named after Powassan<\/strong>, Ontario <strong>where it was first discovered in 1958<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>How do people get affected?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Not all ticks carry these <\/strong>viruses and <strong>not all people bitten<\/strong> by a <strong>tick will get sick<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A tick needs to be attached to a person for a certain length of time<\/strong> before it can cause disease.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>People in the <strong>initial days can experience symptoms of fever<\/strong>, <strong>headache<\/strong>, vomiting, and weakness.<\/li>\n<li>The virus can <strong>further cause brain infection<\/strong> (encephalitis) or <strong>form the membranes around the brain<\/strong> and spinal cord (meningitis).<\/li>\n<li>In <strong>severe cases, patients can suffer from confusion<\/strong>, <strong>loss of coordination<\/strong>, <strong>difficulty speaking<\/strong>, and seizures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatment:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>There are <strong>no medications to prevent<\/strong> or treat Powassan virus infection.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rest, fluids,<\/strong> and over-the-counter pain medications <strong>may relieve some symptoms.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is a Virus?<\/h3>\n<p>A virus is an infectious microbe consisting of a segment of nucleic acid (either DNA or RNA) surrounded by a protein coat. A virus cannot replicate alone; instead, it must infect cells and use components of the host cell to make copies of itself.
