{"id":11398,"date":"2023-05-29T09:38:09","date_gmt":"2023-05-29T04:08:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=11398"},"modified":"2025-03-30T02:21:59","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T20:51:59","slug":"great-himalayan-national-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/great-himalayan-national-park\/","title":{"rendered":"Great Himalayan National Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Great Himalayan National Park:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is located in Banjaar Sub-Division of <strong>Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh<\/strong> in the far <strong>Western Himalayas<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It spreads across a total <strong>area of 1171 sq km.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was constituted in 1984 and was formally <strong>notified as a national park in 1999<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>GHNP was awarded <strong>UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 2014.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Topography:<\/strong> The park is a stunning mix of lush <strong>coniferous forests, meadows, glaciers and mountain peaks<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fauna:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Biodiversity surveys of GHNP in the past decade have identified <strong>31 mammal species, 209 bird species, 12 reptile species<\/strong>, 9 amphibian species and 125 insect species.<\/li>\n<li>Animals like the bharal (blue sheep), common leopard, <strong>snow leopard, Himalayan brown bear, Himalayan tahr<\/strong>, musk deer and serow.<\/li>\n<li>Endangered western tragopan, lammergeiers, <strong>Himalayan griffon vultures and golden eagles.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flora:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>GHNP boasts 832 plant species, representing 128 families and 427 genera and comprising <strong>26% of the total flora of Himachal Pradesh<\/strong>. These include 794 angiosperm species, 11 gymnosperm species (pines, conifers and cypresses) and 27 fern species.<\/li>\n<li>The boundaries of GHNP are also contiguous with: the <strong>Pin Valley National Park<\/strong> in the Trans-Himalaya range, the <strong>Rupi Bhabha Wildlife Sanctuary<\/strong> in the Sutlej watershed and the <strong>Kanawar Wildlife Sanctuary<\/strong> in Parvati valley.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What is kanawar wildlife sanctuary known for?<\/h3>\n<p>Kanwar Sanctuary is home to the rare &#8220;Western Tragopan&#8221; and 200 species of birds and over 30 species of mammals.
