territory.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Iran, Chabahar is its only oceanic port with direct access to the Indian Ocean, bypassing the congested Strait of Hormuz.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>The 2024 contract<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India and Iran signed a landmark 10-year contract in May 2024, replacing earlier short-term arrangements, to equip and operate the Shahid Beheshti terminal.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To avoid financial penalties from US sanctions, India prepaid its $120 million investment and transferred its operational stake at Shahid Beheshti to local entities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>History of US Sanctions on Chabahar<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American 400;\">The Trump administration withdrew the US from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018 and imposed sanctions on dealing with Iran.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span states, Afghanistan, and Russia.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>India&#8217;s Investment So Far<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2021, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar informed Parliament that:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight:
