Shri Harjit Singh Grewal<\/b> assumed charge as the <\/span>Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities\u00a0 <\/b>on <\/span>21 July 2026<\/b>. He succeeded <\/span>Iqbal Singh Lalpura<\/b>, whose term ended in April 2025. <\/span>The appointment was notified by the <\/span>Ministry of Minority Affairs<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Harjit Singh Grewal Assumes Charge as Chairman of National Commission for Minorities<\/b><\/h2>\n

The appointment of <\/span>Harjit Singh Grewal<\/b> as Chairman of the <\/span>National Commission for Minorities<\/a><\/strong> is part of a series of recent appointments to strengthen the leadership and functioning of the statutory body responsible for monitoring safeguards for notified minority communities in India.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other Key Appointments in the National Commission for Minorities<\/b><\/h2>\n

  • Smt. S. Munawari Begum<\/b> assumed office as the Vice Chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities on 20 July 2026.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Shri Glenn Souza Ticlo<\/b> assumed office as a Member of the Commission representing the Christian community; he served as a Member of the Goa Legislative Assembly from the Aldona constituency for two consecutive terms between 2012 and 2022.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Shri Berjis Desai<\/b> joined the Commission on 10 March 2026 as the Member representing the Parsi community.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    With these appointments, the National Commission for Minorities has a newly strengthened leadership comprising the Chairman, Vice Chairperson and Members representing different notified minority communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

    About the National Commission for Minorities<\/b><\/h2>\n

    The <\/span>National Commission for Minorities<\/b> is a <\/span>statutory body<\/b> established under the <\/span>National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992.<\/b> The Commission consists of a Chairperson, a Vice Chairperson and Five Members.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Under Section 4(1) of the <\/span>NCM Act, 1992<\/b>, the Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, and Members <\/span>hold office for a term of three years from the date they assume office.<\/b><\/p>\n

    Notified Minority Communities<\/b><\/h3>\n

    The Central Government has notified the following six religious communities as minorities:<\/span><\/p>\n

    • Muslims<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Christians<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Sikhs<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Buddhists<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Parsis (Zoroastrians)<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Jains<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      National Commission for Minorities Functions\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n

      The National Commission for Minorities is mandated to:<\/span><\/p>\n

      • Monitor the implementation of constitutional and legal safeguards for minorities.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Examine complaints relating to the deprivation of minority rights and safeguards.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Evaluate the progress of minority development.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Study discrimination against minorities and recommend measures for its removal.<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Conduct research on the socio-economic and educational development of minorities.<\/span><\/li>\n
