


{"id":115280,"date":"2026-07-26T14:30:48","date_gmt":"2026-07-26T09:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=115280"},"modified":"2026-07-26T17:39:39","modified_gmt":"2026-07-26T12:09:39","slug":"undavalli-caves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/undavalli-caves\/","title":{"rendered":"Undavalli Caves"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Undavalli Caves Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two-day Telugu Mahotsavam, organised by the Andhra Pradesh State Creativity and Culture Society, commenced with grandeur at the historic Undavalli Caves in Guntur district recently.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Undavalli Caves<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Undavalli Caves are among the finest examples of <\/span><b>ancient rock-cut architecture <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in India.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are located in Undavalli Village of Guntur district in <\/span><b>Andhra Pradesh.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are believed to be <\/span><b>built <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between the <\/span><b>4th and 5th centuries by the Gupta dynasty.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The caves are <\/span><b>located on a hill overlooking the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/krishna-river\/\" target=\"_blank\">Krishna River<\/a>.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These caves have been <\/span><b>carved out of solid sandstone on a hillside.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best known and <\/span><b>largest one has four stories <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with a huge <\/span><b>statue of Lord Vishnu<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a reclining posture<\/span><b> sculpted from a single block of granite<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the second floor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other shrines inside the cave are dedicated to the Trimurti: Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>main cave<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> belongs to the earliest examples of <\/span><b>Gupta architecture,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> primarily <\/span><b>primitive rock-cut monastery cells <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carved into the sandstone hills.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Initiall<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>y<\/strong> the caves were shaped as a <\/span><b>Buddhist monastery,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>first floor <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still <\/span><b>retains the style of a Buddhist vihara<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including some Buddhist sculptures.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The facade of the third floor is adorned with numerous sculptures, including depictions of lions and elephants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Undavalli caves are <\/span><b>associated with the Vishnukundina kings of 420 to 620 CE<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
