text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nalabana Wildlife Sanctuary, or the <\/span><b>Nalbana Bird Sanctuary,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the<\/span><b> core area of the Ramsar-designated <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wetlands of <\/span><b>Chilika Lake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, located in the state of <\/span><b>Odisha<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the<\/span><b> center of the lake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is a major island with an area of 15.53 sq.km.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Island of Nalabana was declared a bird sanctuary in the year 1987 after observing the sheer number of diverse bird species found there.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It supports a congregation of about<\/span><b> 60% <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the <\/span><b>total migratory birds visiting Chilika Lagoon <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">each year.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rare or threatened species<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as the <\/span><b>Asian dowitcher<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Limnodromus semipalmatus), the<\/span><b> critically endangered spoon-billed sandpiper<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Calidris pygmaea), and <\/span><b>Pallas\u2019 fish eagl<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e (Haliaeetus leucoryphus) are often recorded as part of this crowd.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>During monsoons,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the entire sanctuary is<\/span><b> submerged under water<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with only a few treetops and watchtower above water level.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Key Facts about Chilika Lake<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is<\/span><b> Asia\u2019s largest brackish water lake.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the<\/span><b> second-largest brackish water lagoon in the world<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, after the New Caledonian barrier reef in New Caledonia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>connected to the Bay of Bengal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by a 32 km long and 1.5 km<\/span><b> wide channel <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that mostly<\/span><b> runs parallel to the Bay, separated by a narrow spit.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Daya and Bhargavi rivers feed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the lake except during the dry months from December to June, when saline ocean water enters through a small passage.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>1981<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Chilika Lake was designated the<\/span><b> first Indian wetland of international importance under the Ramsar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Convention.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
