Of these, three were inscribed through an emergency procedure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Six Sites Added to UNESCO\u2019s World Heritage in Danger List in 2026<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three sites were newly inscribed on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/unesco-world-heritage-sites-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>UNESCO<\/b><b> World Heritage List<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and simultaneously placed on the UNESCO List of World Heritage in Danger:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in South Sudan<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mount Amel Castles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Lebanon<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sebastia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the State of Palestine<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three previously recognised UNESCO World Heritage Sites were newly placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ancient City of Taurica Chersonese and its Chora<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Ukraine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Historic Inner City of Paramaribo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Suriname<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tyre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Lebanon<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>About Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape (South Sudan)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Boma-Badingilo Migratory<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Landscape is a vast East African savanna landscape known for the world\u2019s largest known terrestrial mammal migration and rich <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/biodiversity\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>biodiversity<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It supports diverse communities that have traditionally practised herding, farming and fishing, reflecting the region\u2019s cultural and linguistic diversity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faces threats from infrastructure development, commercial poaching and wildlife trafficking.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Persistent insecurity and limited institutional and financial capacity hinder effective conservation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inscribed on the World Heritage List and the List of World Heritage in Danger through an emergency procedure.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Mount Amel Castles (Lebanon)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Located in the <\/span><b>Jabal Amel region<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><b>southern Lebanon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Mount Amel Castles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a group of five castles that reflects the development of defensive architecture from the Crusades and Islamic dynasties to the 19th century.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The site is important for understanding the military and architectural history of the region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It received enhanced protection from UNESCO in November 2024 due to the threat posed by armed conflict.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ongoing conflict has caused heavy damage and threatens the conservation of the site.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Committee has called for urgent measures to protect the castles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2026, it was added to the World Heritage List and the List of World Heritage in Danger through an emergency procedure.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Sebastia (State of Palestine)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Located in the <\/span><b>West Bank<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Sebastia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an important archaeological site preserving the remains of civilisations that occupied the region over more than 2,000 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its history goes back at least to the 9th century BCE, when Samaria-Sebaste was the capital of the northern Kingdom of Israel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The site also contains remains from the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, Crusader, Ayyubid\/Mamluk and Ottoman periods.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the Ottoman period, it was one of the designated <\/span><b>\u201cThrone Villages\u201d.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A major threat is the planned creation of the \u201cSamaria\u201d (Shomron) National Park, which could divide the heritage property.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Added to both the World Heritage List and the List of World Heritage in Danger through an emergency procedure.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Ancient City of Tauric Chersonese and its Chora (Ukraine)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Ancient City of Tauric Chersonese and its Chora<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an important archaeological site <\/span><b>located in Crimea.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The occupation of Crimea has prevented Ukraine from effectively ensuring the site\u2019s protection, conservation and management.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNESCO and UNITAR\/UNOSAT have used satellite imagery since 2014 to monitor the site.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monitoring has revealed deterioration caused by new construction and large-scale archaeological excavations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Committee also called for stronger international cooperation to prevent the illegal trafficking of cultural property from Crimea.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Originally inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2013; added to the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2026.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Historic Inner City of Paramaribo (Suriname)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Historic Inner City of Paramaribo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> represents the historic urban heritage of <\/span><b>Suriname<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNESCO recognised progress in management planning, institutional strengthening and fire-risk prevention.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, some construction projects were carried out without properly assessing their impact on the heritage site.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new National Assembly hall and Yogh parking garage were found to negatively affect the historic urban landscape.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These developments were considered a serious threat to the site\u2019s authenticity and integrity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Originally inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2002; added to the Danger List in 2026.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Tyre (Lebanon)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Tyre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an important archaeological and historical site whose remains reflect the long history of one of the ancient cities of the <\/span><b>Mediterranean<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ongoing hostilities in Lebanon have created a direct threat to the site.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Committee determined that the conditions required to protect its Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) are no longer adequately met.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The site is <\/span><b>also included on the International List of Cultural Property under Enhanced Protection under the 1999 Second Protocol to the 1954 Hague Convention.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was added to the Danger List at Lebanon\u2019s request.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Committee urged all parties involved in hostilities to avoid further damage to the site and respect their obligations under international law.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>About UNESCO List of World Heritage in Danger<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>UNESCO List of World Heritage in Danger <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is maintained under the <\/span><b>1972 World Heritage Convention<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It <\/span><b>includes World Heritage properties facing serious and specific threats that may damage the very characteristics for which they were recognised as having Outstanding Universal Value (OUV).<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Threats may arise from armed conflict, natural <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/disasters\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>disasters<\/strong><\/a>, pollution, poaching, uncontrolled urbanisation, inappropriate development and climate change.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A site may face an ascertained danger, where a serious and proven imminent threat already exists.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may also face a potential danger, where existing or planned activities could seriously damage its heritage values.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Inscription is not a delisting or punishment. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is intended to mobilise international cooperation, technical assistance and financial support for conservation and corrective action.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The World Heritage Fund may provide immediate assistance to endangered properties.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Major Threats Highlighted by the 2026 Additions<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2026 additions demonstrate that threats to World Heritage are increasingly multidimensional:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Armed conflict<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Damage to Mount Amel Castles and Tyre.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Occupation and geopolitical instabilit<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y: Threats to Taurica Chersonese and its Chora.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Poaching and wildlife trafficking<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Threats to Boma-Badingilo.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Infrastructure and urban development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Threats to Boma-Badingilo and Paramaribo.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Inadequate land-use planning<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Threat to Sebastia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Weak institutional capacity and insecurity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Affecting conservation in South Sudan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Climate change and environmental pressures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Increasingly affecting heritage properties globally.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UNESCO World Heritage in Danger List 2026 includes six newly added sites.
