The newly added sites include France\u2019s Normandy D-Day Landing Beaches, Greece\u2019s Mount Olympus, Japan\u2019s Asuka-Fujiwara Archaeological Sites and South Sudan\u2019s Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Newly Added UNESCO World Heritage Sites<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/unesco-world-heritage-sites-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>UNESCO World Heritage List<\/strong><\/a> has been expanded with the addition of new cultural, natural and mixed heritage sites during the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee. These newly recognised sites represent important examples of history, ancient civilisation, mythology and biodiversity conservation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1. Normandy D-Day Landing Beaches, France<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Normandy Landing Beaches in northern France have been recognised as a Cultural World Heritage Site due to their historical importance in the Second World War.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The site includes five beaches &#8211; <\/span><b>Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along with the <\/span><b>Pointe du Hoc assault site.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These locations were central to <\/span><b>Operation Overlord<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, launched on 6 June 1944, when more than 150,000 Allied troops landed on the Normandy coast. The operation marked a turning point in World War II and contributed to the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi occupation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The site <\/span><b>preserves military remains<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including German fortifications, bomb-damaged landscapes, Allied harbour structures and sunken vessels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNESCO highlighted conservation challenges such as <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>climate change<\/strong><\/a>, rising sea levels, coastal erosion, tourism pressure and infrastructure development.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>2. Mount Olympus, Greece<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Mount Olympus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been inscribed as a <\/span><b>Mixed World Heritage Site<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, recognising both its cultural and natural significance.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Located in <\/span><b>northern Greece<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Mount Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, rising to 2,918 metres.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to ancient Greek mythology, it was <\/span><b>considered the home of the Twelve Olympian Gods and the throne of Zeus.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mountain also contains rich biodiversity, including unique alpine ecosystems and endemic species.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its inscription highlights the relationship between mythology, cultural traditions and environmental conservation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>3. Asuka-Fujiwara Archaeological Sites, Japan<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Asuka-Fujiwara Archaeological Sites have been added as a Cultural World Heritage Site.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Located in Nara Prefecture, the site includes 19 archaeological locations dating from the 6th to 8th centuries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These remains represent the period when Japan developed its first centralised state influenced by Chinese political and administrative systems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sites preserve remains of royal palaces, government offices, Buddhist temples and ancient burial structures.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They provide important evidence about the formation of Japan\u2019s early state institutions and influenced later capitals such as Nara and Kyoto.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>4. Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape, South Sudan<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Boma-Badingilo Migratory Landscape<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> became <\/span><b>South Sudan\u2019s first World Heritage Site.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The site consists of extensive wetlands, floodplains and savanna ecosystems shaped by seasonal rainfall patterns.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It supports one of the world\u2019s largest land mammal migrations, involving around 6 million white-eared kob, tiang and Mongalla gazelles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The landscape also provides habitat for elephants, lions, cheetahs and other wildlife.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It supports local communities dependent on pastoralism, agriculture and fishing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>About UNESCO World Heritage Convention (1972)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>UNESCO World Heritage Convention<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an <\/span><b>international agreement adopted in 1972<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><b>protect and conserve important cultural and natural sites that have Outstanding Universal Value (OUV)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning they are considered valuable for the entire world, not just one country.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Adopted<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The Convention was adopted by the UNESCO General Conference on 16 November 1972.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Aim<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: To identify, protect and preserve heritage sites that are threatened by human activities, natural disasters, climate change and other challenges.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Types of World Heritage Sites:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Cultural Heritage Sites<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Man-made sites such as monuments, historical buildings, archaeological sites and historic cities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Natural Heritage Sites<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Areas with exceptional natural beauty, biodiversity, ecosystems or geological importance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Mixed Heritage Sites<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Sites having both cultural and natural significance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Outstanding Universal Value (OUV)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A site must have exceptional importance from a cultural, historical, scientific or natural perspective to be included in the World Heritage List.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>World Heritage List<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: UNESCO maintains a list of recognised sites that require protection and conservation due to their global importance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Selection Criteria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A site must fulfil at least one of UNESCO\u2019s 10 criteria related to cultural achievements, historical importance, natural features or biodiversity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Advisory Bodies:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/international-council-on-monuments-and-sites\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS)<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> : Evaluates cultural heritage sites.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> : Evaluates natural heritage sites.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> : Provides technical support for conservation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><b>World Heritage Committee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A 21-member committee that decides the inclusion of new sites in the World Heritage List and monitors their conservation status.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Importance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It helps preserve global heritage, protect cultural identity, conserve biodiversity and promote sustainable tourism.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UNESCO adds Normandy D-Day Landing Beaches, Mount Olympus, and other new World Heritage Sites.
