However, awareness among India&#8217;s 1 crore teachers remains low, and impact assessments are yet to be formalised.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since NPST itself hasn&#8217;t launched, teachers have little incentive to engage with mentoring sessions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Higher Education Reforms<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Controversial UGC changes<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2025 draft UGC regulations on appointing teachers, Vice-Chancellors, and staff faced strong opposition \u2014 particularly for <\/span><b>giving governors a decisive say<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Vice-Chancellor appointments and for removing the cap on contractual professorships.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New UGC undergraduate\/postgraduate degree rules \u2014 built around flexibility and multidisciplinarity \u2014 have been formally in force since the 2025 academic year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, institutions are still struggling with concepts like a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commerce student studying science, or transferring credits via the National Credit Framework<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Education-skilling convergence<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Swayam Plus platform<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers over 500 industry-developed courses across 15 sectors, including emerging technologies, with 6.5 lakh registrations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New &#8220;<\/span><b>AI for All&#8221; modules<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (AI for Physics, AI for Chemistry, AI in Accounting, AI for Educators, AI\/ML using Python) have drawn 1 lakh registrations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Key gaps:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> State university-affiliated colleges remain resistant to flexible credit systems, and there is minimal funding allocated to State universities to implement such flexibility.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proposed Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan (VBSA) Bill, meant to replace the UGC, notably lacks a grant-giving function \u2014 a core UGC role.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>The Three-Language Policy Controversy<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pradhan pushed NEP adoption \u2014 particularly the three-language formula \u2014 by tying central funding for primary education schemes to state compliance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamil Nadu remains a holdout, though West Bengal&#8217;s new government has accepted it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In CBSE schools, Pradhan mandated learning two Bharatiya languages from Classes 6 to 12, <\/span><b>prioritising Indian languages over English<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some relief was granted to current students, but the government has held firm on this as the norm going forward \u2014 even though NEP itself, while championing Indian languages, simultaneously emphasises learning English and other foreign languages.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pralhad Joshi takes charge of an education agenda rich in ambition but uneven in execution \u2014 from foundational literacy gains undercut by persistent learning gaps, to higher education reforms hampered by funding shortfalls, to a language policy facing continued federal pushback.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carrying these reforms to genuine completion, rather than just headline announcements, will define the next chapter of India&#8217;s education
