The name combines the Tamil words Pachai meaning &#8220;green&#8221; and Malai meaning &#8220;hill,&#8221; reflecting the extensive green vegetation that covers much of the landscape. These hills are known for their green landscapes, indigenous communities, forests, rivers and waterfalls The hills also hold historical significance as the Sangam Period of Tamil literature flourished here during the Chera, Chola and Pandya dynasties.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Pachaimalai Hills<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pachaimalai Hills form an important highland region of Tamil Nadu with diverse geographical, historical, cultural and economic features.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Location: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pachaimalai Hills are situated in Tamil Nadu State in southern India and form the northeastern section of the Tamil Nadu uplands.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Extent: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hills lie about 80 kilometres from Tiruchirappalli and also extend into the Gangavalli Taluk of Salem district.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Eastern Ghats Extension: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hill range represents an eastward extension of the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/eastern-ghats\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Eastern Ghats<\/strong><\/a>. Along with the Javadi, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/shevaroy-hills\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Shevaroy<\/strong><\/a> and Kalrayan Hills, it forms an important chain of discontinuous highlands across central and northeastern Tamil Nadu.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Area: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hills spread across nearly 5,200 square miles (about 13,500 square kilometres).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Height: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elevation ranges between 1,770 feet (540 metres) and 4,620 feet (1,400 metres), creating varied landscapes from valleys to elevated plateaus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Natural boundary: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pachaimalai Hills separate the Kaveri (Cauvery) River basin in the south from the Palar River basin in the north, making them an important watershed region within Tamil Nadu.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Geological structure: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The landscape mainly consists of rounded hills made of granitic gneiss formations.
