(Kalpasar) Project is at an advanced stage of finalisation, the Centre informed the Rajya Sabha recently. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Kalpasar Project<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kalpasar Project, or the <\/span><b>Gulf of Khambhat Development Project, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is a proposed <\/span><b>multipurpose water infrastructure project<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><b>Gujarat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It aims to cater to the <\/span><b>irrigation, drinking water, transport, and energy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> demands of Gujarat\u2019s <\/span><b>Saurashtra region.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project proposes a <\/span><b>64-km-long dam across <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>Gulf of Khambhat <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to create a reservoir spanning around 2,000 sq.km., <\/span><b>one of the world\u2019s largest coastal freshwater reservoirs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aim is to <\/span><b>trap freshwater flowing from several rivers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">into the gulf and create a giant reservoir.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proposed reservoir will have a gross storage capacity of 13,000 million cubic metres (MCM), larger than the Sardar Sarovar dam\u2019s 9,460 MCM.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reservoir will <\/span><b>receive water from four major rivers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 <\/span><b>Sabarmati, Mahi, Dhadhar, and Narmada.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project is expected to significantly<\/span><b> enhance freshwater availability <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and help <\/span><b>address water scarcity <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the Saurashtra region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is expected to<\/span><b> irrigate <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly <\/span><b>10 lakh hectares <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">across nine districts of Saurashtra.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides water storage, the project proposes a <\/span><b>highway-cum-rail corridor over the dam.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The corridor is expected to<\/span><b> reduce the travel distance between Bhavnagar and Surat by around 179 kilometres,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bringing it down from about 356 km to approximately 177 km via the proposed dyke corridor.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project also envisages the development of around <\/span><b>2,470 MW of hybrid renewable energy capacity on reclaimed land that remains submerged during high tide.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>renewable energy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generated is proposed to be <\/span><b>used, among other purposes, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for <\/span><b>pumping freshwater to meet irrigation requirements<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the coastal regions of Saurashtra.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>The Netherlands <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is <\/span><b>providing technical expertise and engineering cooperation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the Kalpasar Project.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>News<\/b><strong>:<\/strong> <a
