Most tribes inhabit the Chotanagpur Plateau and Santhal Pargana, where they have preserved their distinct languages, traditional institutions and rich cultural heritage. The tribes belong mainly to the Austroasiatic (Munda) and Dravidian language families. Nature worship through the Sarna faith, agriculture, forest-based livelihoods, colourful festivals and strong community institutions continue to shape tribal life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Major Tribes of Jharkhand<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The major tribes of Jharkhand include the <\/span><b>Santhal, Munda, Oraon, Ho, Kharia, Bhumij, Gond, Baiga, Khond, Lohra, Birhor, Birjia, Asur, Mal Paharia, Sauria Paharia, Parhaiya and Korwa. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each tribe has a distinct identity reflected in its language, traditional institutions, livelihood, customs and historical significance. Jharkhand is also home to eight <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/particularly-vulnerable-tribal-groups-pvtgs\/\" target=\"_blank\">Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs)<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; <\/span><b>Asur, Birhor, Birjia, Hill Kharia, Korwa, Mal Paharia, Parhaiya and Sauria Paharia.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>Santhal (Santal)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Santhals are the largest <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/scheduled-tribes\/\" target=\"_blank\">Scheduled Tribe<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Jharkhand and the dominant community of the Santhal Pargana region.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It mainly inhabits Dumka, Sahibganj, Pakur, Godda, Deoghar and Jamtara districts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Village administration follows the Manjhi-Pargana system headed by the Manjhi.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Led the historic <\/span><b>Santhal Hul (1855-56)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against British rule under <\/span><b>Sidho Murmu, Kanho Murmu, Chand Murmu and Bhairav Murmu.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Munda<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mundas are among the oldest tribes of the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/chota-nagpur-plateau\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chotanagpur Plateau<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are closely associated with the life forest-based lifestyle.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of India\u2019s 75 PVTGs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Found mainly in Latehar, Gumla, Hazaribagh, Giridih and Chatra.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speak the Birhor language of the Munda family.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditionally they survive worship.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Birjia\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Birjia are among the smallest tribal communities of Jharkhand.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mainly inhabit Gumla, Latehar and Lohardaga districts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speak Birjia, closely related to Asuri.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: rich oral traditions and folk dances.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Baiga<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Baiga<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are an ethnic group found in central India primarily in the state of Madhya Pradesh, and in smaller numbers in the surrounding states of Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mainly found in Palamu and neighbouring districts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditionally depended on forests, shifting cultivation and herbal medicine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow nature worship along with Hindu traditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Known for their extensive knowledge of medicinal plants.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recognised as a Scheduled Tribe in Jharkhand but not as a PVTG in the state.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Khond (Kondh)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Khonds are a small tribal community found mainly near the Odisha border.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mainly inhabit southern Jharkhand.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span
