


{"id":11575,"date":"2023-06-06T07:46:59","date_gmt":"2023-06-06T02:16:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=11575"},"modified":"2025-03-30T03:26:15","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T21:56:15","slug":"about-agra-fort","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/about-agra-fort\/","title":{"rendered":"About Agra Fort"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Agra Fort:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>It is a large <strong>16th-century fortress<\/strong> <strong>of red sandstone<\/strong> located on the banks of <strong>Yamuna River<\/strong> in the historic <strong>city of Agra<\/strong>, west-central <strong>Uttar Pradesh<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is about <strong>5 km northwest of<\/strong> its more famous sister monument, <strong>the Taj Mahal.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>History<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>It was <strong>built under the commission of Emperor Akbar in 1565.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>It was only during<\/strong> the reign of Akbar\u2019s grandson<strong>, Shah Jahan<\/strong>, that the <strong>site took on its current state.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was the <strong>main residence of the emperors of the Mughal Dynasty till 1638,<\/strong> when the <strong>capital was shifted from Agra<\/strong> to Delhi.<\/li>\n<li>The fort was <strong>invaded and captured by the Maratha Empire in the early 18th century. <\/strong>Thereafter, it changed hands between the Marathas and their foes many times.<\/li>\n<li><strong>After their catastrophic defeat at Third Battle of Panipat<\/strong> by Ahmad Shah Abdali in 1761, <strong>Marathas remained out of the region<\/strong> for the next decade. Finally <strong>Mahadji Shinde took the fort in 1785.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>lost by the Marathas to the British during the Second Anglo-Maratha War<\/strong>, in 1803.<\/li>\n<li>The fort was the <strong>site of a battle during the Indian rebellion of 1857,<\/strong> which caused the end of the British East India Company\u2019s rule in India, and led to a century of direct rule of India by Britain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Features<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>The fort is <strong>crescent-shaped<\/strong>, with a l<strong>ong, nearly straight wall facing the Yamuna river<\/strong> on the east side.<\/li>\n<li>The fort houses a <strong>maze of buildings, including vast underground sections<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The outer wall is <strong>surrounded by a wide and deep moat on three sides<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The Agra Fort has <strong>four main gateways- the Khizri Gate, Amar Singh Gate, Delhi Gate and Ghazni Gate.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Among the <strong>major attractions <\/strong>in the fort <strong>is Jah\u0101ng\u012br\u2019s Palace (Jah\u0101ng\u012bri Mahal),<\/strong> built by Akbar as a private palace for his son Jah\u0101ngir.<\/li>\n<li>The fort complex was <strong>designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)?<\/h3>\n<p>The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), under the Ministry of Culture, was established in the year 1861 as the premier organization for the archaeological research and protection of the cultural heritage of the nation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/india\/story\/asi-does-not-know-built-agra-fort-2388907-2023-06-05\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><u>Who built the Agra Fort?
