It lies on the strategic road linking Leh with Pangong Lake through the Shyok River Valley. The pass is an important transport corridor, supports defence movement, scientific research and regional connectivity and serves as a major gateway towards the Changthang Plateau. Because of its extreme elevation, harsh weather conditions and strategic location, Chang La remains one of the most significant high altitude mountain passes in northern India.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Chang La Pass<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Ladakhi Tibetic language, &#8220;Chang&#8221; means South and &#8220;La&#8221; means Pass. Therefore, Chang La literally translates to &#8220;Southern Pass.&#8221; Although a temple at the pass is dedicated to Changla Baba, historical interpretation states that the pass name existed earlier. The belief that the pass was named after the saint is considered a later popular tradition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Chang La Pass Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chang La Pass is one of the highest motorable mountain passes in Ladakh and plays an important geographical, strategic, scientific and transport role in the Himalayan region.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Location: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chang La Pass is situated in Ladakh State within the Greater Himalaya Range. It is traversed by the road connecting the Indus Valley with Pangong Lake.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Altitude: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has a height of 5,360 metres (17,590 feet).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Geographical position: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pass lies between Leh and the Shyok River valley. It forms a major mountain crossing that enables movement across the rugged eastern Himalayan terrain of Ladakh.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Weather: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chang La experiences severe cold, heavy snowfall during winter and prolonged snow cover. Seasonal freezing and thawing directly affect road quality and demand continuous maintenance by road agencies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Road connectivity: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chang La lies on the Leh-Karu-Sakti-Zingral-Chang La-Durbuk-Tangtse-Pangong Lake motorable road.
