The state has eight notified Scheduled Tribes, of which Gawda, Kunbi and Velip are the principal tribal communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Major Tribes of Goa<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The major tribes of Goa are <\/span><b>Gawda, Kunbi and Velip<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, each preserving distinct traditions, customary institutions, festivals and traditional occupations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Gawda Tribe<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Gawdas are regarded as one of the oldest indigenous communities of Goa and constitute the <\/span><b>largest <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/scheduled-tribes\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Scheduled Tribe<\/b><\/a><b> in the state.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They mainly inhabit Sanguem, Quepem, Canacona, Ponda, Dharbandora and Sattari.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditionally practised <\/span><b>kumeri (shifting cultivation)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before gradually adopting settled agriculture.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rice cultivation, horticulture, cashew farming and collection of forest produce are the principal occupations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speak <\/span><b>Konkani<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with local dialectal variations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrate <\/span><b>Shigmo, Dhalo, Diwali and village temple festivals.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Known for bamboo and cane handicrafts, folk music and traditional dances.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow both <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/hinduism\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hinduism<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Christianity.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Kunbi Tribe<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kunbis are among Goa\u2019s oldest agrarian communities and have contributed significantly to the state\u2019s agricultural heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Found across several parts of North and South Goa.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cultivate paddy, millets, vegetables and horticultural crops.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Known for the distinctive <\/span><b>Kunbi sari<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one of Goa\u2019s oldest traditional handwoven garments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perform the famous <\/span><b>Kunbi Dance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an important folk dance of Goa.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worship village deities, <\/span><b>Mahadev, Hanuman, Khandoba and ancestral spirits.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celebrate <\/span><b>Shigmo, Chavath (Ganesh Chaturthi) and Diwali.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Velip Tribe<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Velips are a <\/span><b>forest-based tribal community<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mainly concentrated in southern Goa and share close cultural ties with the Kunbis.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Primarily found in Sanguem, Quepem, Canacona and Dharbandora.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditionally it depends on agriculture, forest produce and shifting cultivation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possess extensive indigenous knowledge of forests, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/biodiversity\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>biodiversity<\/strong><\/a> and medicinal festivals.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Other Scheduled Tribes of Goa<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides the three major tribes, Goa\u2019s notified Scheduled Tribes include <\/span><b>Dhodia, Dubla (Halpati), Naikda (Talavia), Siddi (Nayaka) and Varli. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These communities are primarily concentrated in neighbouring states and have only a limited population in Goa.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Traditional Tribal Culture of Goa<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goa\u2019s tribal communities have preserved a rich cultural heritage that reflects their close relationship with nature, agriculture and traditional village life.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Gaonkari (Comunidade) system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a traditional form of community-based village administration and collective land management.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Devrai (sacred groves) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are protected forest patches worshiped by local communities and help conserve biodiversity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Shigmo, Dhalo and Fugdi <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are important tribal festivals and folk traditions celebrated through colourful music, dance and community participation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Ghumat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a traditional earthen percussion instrument, is an integral part of Goa\u2019s tribal folk music and cultural performances.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agriculture, forests, traditional crafts and indigenous ecological knowledge continue to shape the lifestyle and cultural
