The 2026 edition was significant as it was the first ICM hosted in the United States since 1986.The medal was awarded to <\/span><b>Yu Deng, John Pardon, Hong Wang and Jacob Tsimerman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for their outstanding contributions to modern mathematics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Fields Medal<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Fields Medal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the <\/span><b>world\u2019s highest honour in mathematics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, recognising exceptional mathematical achievements and encouraging future research among young mathematicians. The Fields Medal was <\/span><b>instituted by Canadian mathematician John Charles Fields <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and was <\/span><b>first awarded in 1936<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Lars Ahlfors and Jesse Douglas at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), Oslo.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Awarded every four years during the <\/span><b><i>International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM).<\/i><\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conferred by the <\/span><b>International Mathematical Union (IMU).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Awarded to mathematicians <\/span><b>Fields Medal 2026 recognised four mathematicians<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> whose work has solved long-standing mathematical problems and expanded the frontiers of modern mathematics, with important applications in physics, geometry, number theory and Artificial Intelligence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Yu Deng (University of Chicago, USA)<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Yu Deng <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was awarded the Fields Medal for solving a part of <\/span><b>David Hilbert\u2019s Sixth Problem<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one of the famous 23 mathematical problems proposed in 1900.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His work created a strong connection between the microscopic world of particles and the macroscopic behaviour of fluids such as water flow.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In simple terms, he mathematically <\/span><b>explained how the movement and interaction of individual particles can lead to large-scale physical phenomena.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His research strengthened the foundations of kinetic theory and fluid dynamics, creating a major link between mathematics and physics.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deng, who won a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 2006, <\/span><b>became the first Chinese national since Shing-Tung Yau (1982) to receive the Fields Medal.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>John Pardon (Stony Brook University, USA)<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Honoured for solving the 20-year-old MNOP Conjecture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a landmark problem involving Calabi-Yau threefolds, and for developing the theory of Virtual Fundamental Cycles, now widely used in modern geometry.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His work advances symplectic geometry, which provides the mathematical framework for describing the motion of physical systems and has applications in theoretical physics, including string theory.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier gained international recognition for solving a 30-year-old knot distortion problem while still an undergraduate.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Hong Wang (New York University, USA)<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hong Wang<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was awarded the Fields Medal for solving the <\/span><b>three-dimensional Kakeya Conjecture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a major mathematical problem that remained unsolved for nearly 50 years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her work advanced <\/span><b>harmonic analysis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the study of patterns and waves) and <\/span><b>geometric measure theory <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(the study of geometric structures and their properties).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her research has applications in areas such as signal processing, wave analysis and partial differential equations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She became the <\/span><b>third woman to receive the Fields Medal, after Maryam Mirzakhani (2014) and Maryna Viazovska (2022).<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Jacob Tsimerman (University of Toronto, Canada)<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Jacob Tsimerman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was awarded the Fields Medal for his pioneering work connecting <\/span><b>number theory, algebraic geometry and mathematical logic.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He proved <\/span><b>Griffiths\u2019 Conjecture <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by applying the concept of <\/span><b>o-minimality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a tool from mathematical logic that helps study complex geometric structures.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier in his career, he contributed to the proof of the <\/span><b>Andre-Oort Conjecture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a major problem in number theory and geometry, for which he received the <\/span><b>SASTRA Ramanujan Prize in 2015.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>India and the Fields Medal<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although <\/span><b>no Indian citizen has won the Fields Medal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, mathematicians of Indian origin have made significant
