Control (NCDC) recently issued several guidelines to combat illnesses arising out of water contamination.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About National Centre for Disease Control\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an institute <\/span><b>under the Indian Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The institute was established to function as a <\/span><b>national centre of excellence for control of communicable diseases.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Director, an officer of the Public Health sub-cadre of Central Health Service, is the administrative and technical head of the Institute.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Headquarters: New Delhi.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides the headquarters in Delhi, NCDC has <\/span><b>8 branches located at Alwar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Rajasthan), <\/span><b>Bengaluru <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Karnataka), <\/span><b>Kozhikode <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Kerala), <\/span><b>Coonoor <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Tamil Nadu), <\/span><b>Jagdalpur <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Chhattisgarh), <\/span><b>Patna <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Bihar), <\/span><b>Rajahmundry <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Andhra Pradesh), and <\/span><b>Varanasi <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Uttar Pradesh).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>National Centre for Disease Control History<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NCDC, <\/span><b>formerly the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD), <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had its <\/span><b>origin as the Central Malaria Bureau, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">established at Kasauli (Himachal Pradesh) <\/span><b>in 1909, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and following expansion, was renamed in <\/span><b>1927 as the Malaria Survey of India.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The organization was <\/span><b>shifted to Delhi in 1938 and called as the Malaria Institute of India (MII).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In view of the drastic reduction achieved in the incidence of malaria under National Malaria Eradication Programme (NMEP), the Government of India decided to reorganize and expand the activities of the institute to cover other communicable diseases.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, in <\/span><b>1963,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the erstwhile <\/span><b>MII was renamed as the <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute of Communicable Diseases (<\/span><b>NICD<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to shoulder these additional responsibilities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the year <\/span><b>2009<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>NICD transforms into <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Centre for Disease Control (<\/span><b>NCDC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) with a larger mandate of controlling emerging and re-emerging diseases.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>National Centre for Disease Control <\/b><b>Functions<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It functions as the nodal agency in the country for <\/span><b>disease surveillance<\/b> <b>facilitating prevention and control of communicable diseases.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>coordination with the State Governments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, NCDC has the capacity and capability for disease surveillance, <\/span><b>outbreak investigation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>rapid response to contain and combat outbreaks.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also <\/span><b>deals with Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an emerging area of concern with far-reaching consequences.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also provides referral <\/span><b>diagnostic support, capacity building,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and t<\/span><b>echnical support to States\/UTs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the country.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>mandate <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the Institute broadly <\/span><b>covers three areas viz. services, trained health manpower development, and
