{"id":11655,"date":"2025-01-29T01:45:43","date_gmt":"2025-01-28T20:15:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=11655"},"modified":"2025-03-30T03:54:58","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T22:24:58","slug":"the-united-nations-relief-and-works-agency-for-palestine-refugees-in-the-near-east-unrwa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/the-united-nations-relief-and-works-agency-for-palestine-refugees-in-the-near-east-unrwa\/","title":{"rendered":"United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA)<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>UN agency<\/strong> that supports the relief and human development of Palestinian refugees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>UNRWA Establishment<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>UNRWA was established by <strong>United Nations General Assembly Resolution<\/strong> 302 (IV) of 8 December <strong>1949<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Objective<\/strong>: To <strong>provide relief, <\/strong>health, and education services <strong>for Palestinians who lost both their homes <\/strong>and their means of livelihood <strong>during the Arab-Israeli wars <\/strong>f<strong>ollowing the establishment of<\/strong> the State of <strong>Israel in 1948<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The agency began operations on 1 May 1950.<\/li>\n<li>In the absence of a solution to the Palestine refugee problem, the <strong>General Assembly has repeatedly renewed UNRWA&#8217;s mandate<\/strong>, most recently extending it until 30 June 2026.<\/li>\n<li><strong>UNRWA Headquarters<\/strong>:\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>It was <strong>originally headquartered in Beirut<\/strong>, Lebanon, but was moved to Vienna, Austria, in 1978.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>In 1996 the General Assembly moved the agency to the Gaza Strip<\/strong> to demonstrate the Assembly\u2019s commitment to the Arab-Israeli peace process.<\/li>\n<li>UNRWA is unique among UN agencies in that it <strong>delivers services directly.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>UNRWA\u2019s <strong>services encompass education, health care, relief and social services<\/strong>, <strong>camp infrastructure<\/strong> and improvement, <strong>microfinance, <\/strong>and emergency assistance, including in times of armed conflict.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>supports more than five million registered Palestinian refugees, and their patrilineal descendants, <\/strong>who fled or were expelled from their homes during the 1948 Palestine war, as well as those who fled or were expelled during and following the 1967 Six Day war.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fields of operations<\/strong>: It provides services in its five fields of operations: <strong>Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the Gaza Strip, and the West Bank, <\/strong>including the <strong>East of Jerusalem.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Funding<\/strong>:\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li>UNRWA is funded <strong>almost entirely by voluntary contributions from UN member states.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>UNRWA also receives some funding from the regular budget of the UN.<\/li>\n<li>UNRWA <strong>reports only to the UN General Assembly.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>UNRWA FAQs<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Q1<\/strong>.
