{"id":116789,"date":"2026-08-03T13:07:24","date_gmt":"2026-08-03T07:37:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=116789"},"modified":"2026-08-03T13:07:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-03T07:37:24","slug":"rakthamichthys-anchi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/rakthamichthys-anchi\/","title":{"rendered":"Rakthamichthys anchi"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Rakthamichthys anchi Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists have discovered a new species of blind and blood-red eel from two non-descript dug-out wells located in a village in Assam\u2019s Goalpara district and has been given the name Rakthamichthys anchi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Rakthamichthys anchi<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a new species of <\/span><b>phreatobitic synbranchid eel discovered in Assam.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The name anchi is a <\/span><b>Garo word<\/b> <b>meaning \u2018blood\u2019.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rakthamichthys genus of <\/span><b>phreatobitic <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(residing exclusively within the <\/span><b>phreatic zone of groundwater aquifers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) swamp eels (Synbranchidae) is endemic to India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is now the <\/span><b>second swamp eel of the genus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be discovered in the Northeast.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Characteristics<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its body carries <\/span><b>no pigment at all<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its <\/span><b>blood red colour,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which gives the species its name, actually comes from blood vessels showing through its almost transparent skin.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>What are Eels?<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eels are <\/span><b>elongated, slender fish<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, of which there are over 500 species characterized by elongate wormlike bodies.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They <\/span><b>lack scales, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and their dorsal and anal fins run continuously around their tail.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Habitat:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Eels can be found in <\/span><b>oceans across the globe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and many species can be found in <\/span><b>freshwater habitats as well.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diet: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eels are primarily predatory fish with carnivorous diets. Some eel species are cannibalistic.
