


{"id":11684,"date":"2023-06-09T04:37:54","date_gmt":"2023-06-08T23:07:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=11684"},"modified":"2025-03-30T04:50:15","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T23:20:15","slug":"giant-metrewave-radio-telescope-gmrt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/giant-metrewave-radio-telescope-gmrt\/","title":{"rendered":"Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>GMRT is a <strong>low-frequency radio telescope<\/strong> that <strong>helps investigate various radio astrophysical problems<\/strong> ranging from nearby solar systems to the edge of the observable universe.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: It is located at <strong>Khodad, 80 km north of Pune, Maharashtra<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is a <strong>project of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE<\/strong>), operating <strong>under the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The telescope is <strong>operated by the National Centre of Radio Astrophysics (NCRA).<\/strong> NCRA is a <strong>part of the<\/strong> <strong>TIFR<\/strong>, Mumbai.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>consists of 30 fully- steerable dish-type antennas of 45-meter diameter each, spread over a 25-km region.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>GMRT is presently the <strong>world\u2019s largest radio telescope operating at meter wavelength<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>recently upgraded with new receivers<\/strong>, after which it is <strong>also known as the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What are Pulsars?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Pulsars are <strong>rotating neutron stars<\/strong> observed to <strong>have pulses of radiation at very regular intervals<\/strong> that typically range from milliseconds to seconds.<\/li>\n<li>Pulsars <strong>have very strong magnetic fields<\/strong> which <strong>funnel jets of particles out<\/strong> along the two magnetic poles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>These accelerated particles produce very powerful beams of light.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Often, the magnetic field is not aligned with the spin axis<\/strong>, so those beams of particles and <strong>light are swept around as the star rotates<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Pulsars are among the <strong>few celestial objects that emit circular polarised light.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is a Neutron Star?<\/h3>\n<p>Neutron stars are formed when a massive star runs out of fuel and collapses. The very central region of the star \u2013 the core \u2013 collapses, crushing together every proton and electron into a neutron.
