


{"id":11696,"date":"2023-06-09T07:13:31","date_gmt":"2023-06-09T01:43:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=11696"},"modified":"2025-03-30T04:54:46","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T23:24:46","slug":"convention-on-the-conservation-of-migratory-species-of-wild-animals-cms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/convention-on-the-conservation-of-migratory-species-of-wild-animals-cms\/","title":{"rendered":"Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>CMS also <strong>referred to as the Bonn Convention<\/strong>, is an e<strong>nvironmental treaty under the aegis of the United Nations Environment Programme.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>signed in Bonn<\/strong>, Germany, <strong>on 23 June 1979.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It provides a global platform <strong>for the conservation and sustainable use of migratory animals <\/strong>and their habitats.<\/li>\n<li>CMS is the <strong>only global and UN-based intergovernmental organisation<\/strong> established <strong>exclusively for the conservation<\/strong> and management <strong>of terrestrial, aquatic and avian migratory species throughout their range<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>parties to the convention acknowledge<\/strong> the importance of <strong>conserving migratory species, and the need to pay special attention <\/strong>to species whose conservation status is unfavourable.<\/li>\n<li>Activities by CMS Parties may <strong>range from legally binding treaties<\/strong> (called Agreements) <strong>to less formal instruments<\/strong>, such as Memoranda of Understanding.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Conference of Parties (COP) is the decision-making organ of this convention<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>CMS has two Appendices<\/strong>.\u00a0 These appendices list migratory species to which the Convention applies.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Appendix I<\/strong> lists <strong>endangered migratory species <\/strong>and includes <strong>prohibitions regarding the take of these species<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Appendix II lists species that have an \u2018unfavourable conservation status\u2019<\/strong> (as per the conditions set out in the Convention) a<strong>nd encourages range states to draft range-wide agreements<\/strong> for conservation and management of these species.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>India and CMS:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>India has been a <strong>party to the CMS since 1983.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>India has also <strong>signed non-legally binding MOU with CMS<\/strong> on the conservation and management of <strong>Siberian Cranes (1998), Marine Turtles (2007), Dugongs (2008) and Raptors (2016).\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is the United Nations Environment Programme?<\/h3>\n<p>The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global authority on the environment.
