Although Mig La became the highest motorable road in 2025, Umling La remains one of the world&#8217;s most significant high altitude mountain passes because of its border connectivity, engineering achievement, tourism value and strategic importance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Umling La Pass<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A mountain pass is a natural route through a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mountain-ranges-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">mountain range<\/a><\/strong> that allows movement between valleys or regions. Such passes have historically supported travel, trade, defence and communication. <\/span><b>Umling La Pass<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is situated in the Changthang area of Ladakh near Demchok. It stands among the world&#8217;s highest mountain passes connected by a motorable road and remains an important example of high altitude infrastructure in India.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Umling La Pass Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Umling La Pass<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is among the world&#8217;s highest mountain passes accessible by road. It lies close to the India-China border in eastern Ladakh.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Location: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Umling La is situated in the Changthang region of Ladakh near Demchok village. It lies on the ridge separating the Koyul Lungpa valley from the Indus River basin, making it geographically important.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Altitude:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The pass stands at about 5,799 metres (19,024 feet) above sea level. Its location makes it strategically significant while also remaining one of the most remote and sparsely inhabited regions of Ladakh.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Connectivity: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Umling La connects Chisumle and Demchok villages through a high altitude road. The distance from Leh is approximately 230 to 250 km, requiring about 8 to 10 hours depending on road conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Climate: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winter temperatures can fall to -40\u00b0C, while oxygen levels remain nearly 50% lower than normal. These harsh conditions make travel and construction exceptionally challenging throughout the year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>World Recognition: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From 2017 to 2025, the Chisumle-Umling La-Demchok Road held the title of the world&#8217;s highest motorable road, surpassing Bolivia&#8217;s Uturuncu Volcano Road at 18,953 feet before Mig La overtook the record in 2025.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Expedition Activities:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Umling La attracts motorcyclists, cyclists and overland travellers. In 2022, international teams from Canada and Switzerland drove auto rickshaws to Umling La at 5,799 metres, setting the highest altitude auto rickshaw driving world record. In addition, the first ever solo woman motorcycle expedition to Umling La by Ms Kanchan Ugursandi was also officially flagged off.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Umling La Road<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Umling La Road represents one of India&#8217;s greatest high altitude infrastructure achievements and has greatly improved connectivity in eastern Ladakh.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Construction Agency:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The road was constructed by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/border-roads-organisation-bro\/\" target=\"_blank\">Border Roads Organisation<\/a><\/strong> (BRO) under Project HIMANK, which develops strategic roads across Ladakh.
