The pass is also known for its glacial landscapes, sacred lakes, military importance and year round connectivity maintained by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>Sela Pass<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Mountain Pass is a natural route through a mountain range that allows movement of people, vehicles and goods between regions. <\/span><b>Sela Pass <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a high altitude mountain pass in the eastern Himalayas located between the Tawang and West Kameng districts of Arunachal Pradesh. It forms the primary road connection to Tawang and carries National Highway 13, making it one of India&#8217;s most significant border transport corridors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>Sela Pass Features<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sela Pass is a strategically important Himalayan pass with unique geographical, ecological, transport and cultural features that make it one of India&#8217;s most significant mountain crossings.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Location: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sela Pass lies on the boundary of Tawang and West Kameng districts in Arunachal Pradesh. It separates Tawang from the rest of India and serves as the main land route connecting the border district with Assam.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Height: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pass stands at about 4,170 metres (13,700 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest motorable mountain passes in India and among the highest motorable passes in the world.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mountain Range: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sela Pass crosses a sub range of the eastern Himalayas. The surrounding region consists of snow covered mountains, deep valleys, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/glacial-landforms\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>glacial landforms<\/strong><\/a> and alpine landscapes with very limited vegetation because of harsh climatic conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Connectivity: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Highway 13, earlier known as NH 229, passes through Sela Pass. It connects Tawang with Dirang, Tezpur, Guwahati and the rest of India, making it the district&#8217;s most important transport corridor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Distance:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The pass is located about 78 km from Tawang and nearly 340 km from Guwahati. It is formed from glacial meltwater and is one of the major natural landmarks of the region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Drainage: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water from Sela Lake flows into the Nuranang River, which is a tributary of the Tawang River.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ecology: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sparse alpine vegetation surrounds the lake and nearby grasslands are used as summer grazing grounds for yaks.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1><b>Sela Tunnel<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sela Tunnel has transformed connectivity across the eastern Himalayas by providing reliable year round transport while strengthening defence logistics and regional development.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Location: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/sela-tunnel-project\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sela Tunnel<\/a><\/strong> is located in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh below Sela Pass.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Project:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) under Project Vartak, it provides uninterrupted all weather connectivity to Tawang.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Engineering Achievement: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is recognised as the world&#8217;s longest bi lane road tunnel above 13,000 feet. The tunnel is constructed about 400 metres below Sela Pass, ensuring travel even during severe snowfall.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Project Components: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project consists of a 980 metre single tube tunnel, a 1,555 metre twin tube tunnel and a 1,200 metre link road. The twin tube system includes a traffic tunnel and a separate emergency services tunnel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Connectivity:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The tunnel connects Tezpur in Assam with Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh through NH 13. It reduces the distance between Dirang and Tawang by about 10 km and cuts travel time by more than one hour.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Need: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Balipara-Chariduar-Tawang Road frequently remained blocked because of heavy snowfall and rain induced landslides.
