He was one of the most respected leaders of the Revolt of 1857. He led the resistance against the British East India Company from Jagdishpur in present day Bhojpur district of Bihar. Despite being nearly 80 years old and in poor health, he commanded rebel forces with remarkable courage. His military leadership, guerrilla warfare tactics and determination made him one of the most successful regional leaders of the uprising.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Kunwar Singh Biography<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Kunwar Singh<\/strong> was born on 13 November 1777 in Jagdishpur, Bihar, into the Ujjainiya clan of the Parmar Rajputs. He was the son of Raja Sahabzada Singh and Panchratan Devi. After his father&#8217;s death in 1826, he became the ruler of the Jagdishpur estate. He was known for horse riding, hunting and strong leadership. Although he faced financial disputes and pressure from the British over his estate. He remained influential among local people, zamindars and soldiers, which later helped him organise resistance during the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/revolt-of-1857\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Revolt of 1857<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Kunwar Singh 1857 Revolt Role<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kunwar Singh emerged as one of the strongest military leaders of the Revolt of 1857. His campaigns across Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh challenged British authority for nearly one year.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Leadership in Bihar:<\/strong> On 25 July 1857, Kunwar Singh took command of the mutinous Danapur sepoys and became the chief organiser of the revolt in Bihar despite being nearly 80 years old.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Siege of Arrah:<\/strong> On 27 July 1857, he captured Arrah, the district headquarters. The siege continued until 3 August, when Major Vincent Eyre relieved the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/british-east-india-company\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>British<\/strong><\/a> garrison and later destroyed Jagdishpur.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Guerrilla Warfare:<\/strong> After losing Jagdishpur, he avoided direct confrontation and adopted guerrilla tactics. His mobile warfare repeatedly confused British forces and enabled him to continue resistance across several regions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Support from Commanders:<\/strong> Kunwar Singh was assisted by his brother Babu Amar Singh and commander in chief Hare Krishna Singh, whose military planning contributed significantly to the early successes of the rebellion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Campaign in Azamgarh:<\/strong> In March 1858, he occupied Azamgarh and successfully resisted initial British attacks before strategically withdrawing under increasing military pressure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Sacrifice at the Ganga:<\/strong> While crossing the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/ganga-river-system\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Ganga River<\/strong><\/a>, a British bullet shattered his left wrist. To prevent infection, he cut off his injured arm near the elbow with his sword and offered it to the river.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Battle of Jagdishpur:<\/strong> On 23 April 1858, Kunwar Singh defeated the British force led by Captain Le Grand near Jagdishpur. The victory restored control over Jagdishpur and the British flag was replaced with his own.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>British Recognition:<\/strong> Even British writers acknowledged his military ability. Sir George Trevelyan and George Bruce Malleson described him as a capable strategist whose guerrilla tactics created serious challenges for British commanders.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Kunwar Singh Death and Succession<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kunwar Singh died on 26 April 1858 at Jagdishpur, only three days after his decisive victory against British forces. He succumbed to injuries suffered during the campaign but remained undefeated in his final battle. After his death, leadership of the resistance passed to his brother Amar Singh, who continued the struggle in Shahabad and later retreated towards Nepal. Kunwar Singh&#8217;s sacrifice established him as one of the greatest military leaders of the Revolt of 1857 against <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/british-rule-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>British Rule<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Kunwar Singh Recognition<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kunwar Singh&#8217;s courage continues to be honoured through national memorials, institutions and commemorative events across India.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Commemorative Stamp:<\/strong> The Government of India issued a commemorative postage stamp on 23 April 1966 to honour his exceptional contribution to the freedom struggle.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>University Named After Him:<\/strong> The Veer Kunwar Singh University was established at Arrah, Bihar, in 1992, preserving his legacy through higher education.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Memorial Bridge:<\/strong> The Veer Kunwar Singh Setu, also called the Arrah-Chhapra Bridge, was inaugurated in 2017, improving connectivity between northern and southern Bihar.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Azadi Park:<\/strong> In 2018, Bihar relocated his statue to Hardinge Park and officially renamed the site Veer Kunwar Singh Azadi Park to commemorate the 160th death anniversary.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Guinness World Record:<\/strong> On 23 April 2022, during Veer Kunwar Singh Vijayotsav at Duler Ground, Jagdishpur, 78,220 people waved the Indian Tricolour simultaneously, creating a Guinness World Record under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>National Commemoration:<\/strong> The 2022 event was attended by <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/home-minister-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Union Home Minister<\/strong><\/a> Amit Shah and organised by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Culture, recognising Kunwar Singh as a leading hero of the Revolt of 1857.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Legacy:<\/strong> Kunwar Singh remains a symbol of courage, patriotism and early <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/rise-of-nationalism-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Indian nationalism<\/strong><\/a>.
