<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on <\/span><b>2 August 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, paying tribute to the visionary freedom fighter who designed the original version of the <\/span><b>Indian National Flag (Tiranga).<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The occasion highlighted his enduring contribution to India\u2019s freedom struggle, national identity and patriotic spirit.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Who was Pingali Venkayya?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Pingali Venkayya<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a freedom fighter, educationist, agriculturist, geologist and linguist whose greatest contribution was designing the flag that later evolved into India\u2019s National Flag.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pingali Venkayya was born on <\/span><b>2 August 1876<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at <\/span><b>Bhatlapenumarru village<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><b>present-day Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He <\/span><b>joined the British Indian Army<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the age of 19 and <\/span><b>served in the Second Boer War (1899-1902)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in South Africa, where he first met <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mahatma-gandhi\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mahatma Gandhi<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He actively <\/span><b>participated in India\u2019s freedom movement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between 1906 and 1922, including the Vande Mataram Movement and the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/home-rule-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\">Home Rule Movement<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He briefly worked as a plague inspector in Madras and Bellary before establishing an educational institution at Machilipatnam.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Pingali Venkayya and the Evolution of the Indian National Flag<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pingali Venkayya devoted years to developing a national flag that could represent India\u2019s aspirations for freedom and unity.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>1916<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he published the booklet A National Flag for India, presenting several designs for a national flag.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the <\/span><b>1921<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Indian National Congress session at Vijayawada, he presented the Swaraj Flag made of khadi to Mahatma Gandhi.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His original design consisted of red and green horizontal bands, representing the two major communities of the time, with the charkha at the centre.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Mahatma Gandhi\u2019s suggestion, a white band was added to represent peace and all other communities, while the charkha symbolised Swaraj and self-reliance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The modified tricolour with the charkha was adopted by the Indian National Congress in <\/span><b>1931<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, forming the basis of the present National Flag.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><b>1947<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an ad hoc committee of the Constituent Assembly recommended replacing the charkha with the Ashoka Chakra while retaining the tricolour.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/constituent-assembly-making-of-the-indian-constitution\/\" target=\"_blank\">Constituent Assembly<\/a><\/strong> <b>adopted the present National Flag on 22 July 1947<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it officially <\/span><b>became India\u2019s National Flag on 15 August 1947.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Pingali Venkayya Legacy and Significance\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pingali Venkayya\u2019s contribution extended well beyond designing the National Flag. His work in the freedom movement, scientific research and public service continues to hold lasting relevance in India\u2019s national journey.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pingali Venkayya\u2019s design became the foundation of the Indian National Flag (Tiranga), one of the most enduring symbols of India\u2019s unity, sovereignty and constitutional values.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His work reflected the ideals of Swadeshi, self-reliance and national unity, making the National Flag a powerful symbol of the freedom movement.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His diverse contributions earned him the popular titles <\/span><b>Japan Venkayya <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for his proficiency in Japanese, <\/span><b>Patti (Cotton) Venkayya<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for his research on Cambodia cotton, and <\/span><b>Diamond Venkayya<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for his work on geology and diamond deposits.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He authored <\/span><b><i>The Mother of Diamonds (1955) <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and later contributed to India\u2019s mineral research after Independence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Independent India recognised his contribution through a <\/span><b>commemorative postage stamp (2009)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and by renaming <\/span><b>All India Radio Vijayawada<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in his honour in <\/span><b>2015<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pingali Venkayya 150th Birth Anniversary and initiatives such as <\/span><b>Har Ghar Tiranga<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> continue to strengthen public respect for the National Flag and preserve the legacy of one of India\u2019s most remarkable nation-builders.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pingali Venkayya 150th Birth Anniversary marks the legacy of the designer of India\u2019s National Flag.
