It forms a natural divide between the Indus Valley in the north and the Zanskar Valley in the south and is known for its high mountains, glaciers, deep gorges, cold desert landscape and strategic importance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Zanskar Range Location and Extent<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Zanskar Range<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b>located mainly in the Kargil and Leh regions of Ladakh<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with its extension reaching towards Himachal Pradesh.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>lies south of the Ladakh Range <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>north of the Great Himalayan Range<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, forming an important part of the <\/span><b>Trans-Himalayan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mountain system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The range extends from the Suru Valley in the northwest to the Tso Kar basin in the southeast.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The range separates the Indus Valley to the north from the Zanskar Valley to the south and is surrounded by valleys such as Stod, Tsarap and Zanskar.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with the Karakoram, Ladakh and Kailas ranges, the Zanskar Range forms part of the broader Trans-Himalayan region.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Zanskar Range Geological Formation<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Zanskar Range belongs to the <\/span><b>Tethys Himalaya<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one of the major geological divisions of the Himalayan system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is mainly <\/span><b>composed of folded and thrust sedimentary and metamorphic rocks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> formed from sediments deposited in the ancient <\/span><b>Tethys Sea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marine fossils found in the rocks provide evidence that the region was once part of an ancient sea before the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The range was <\/span><b>formed due to the convergence of the Indian Plate with the Eurasian Plate,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which resulted in the uplift of the Himalayan mountain system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The deep gorge carved by the Zanskar River exposes highly folded rock layers, making the region important for studying Himalayan geological evolution.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Zanskar Range Physiography and Peaks<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The elevation of the Zanskar Range generally varies <\/span><b>between 3,500 metres and over 7,000 metres<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with several peaks exceeding 6,500 metres.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The region contains several high-altitude peaks, glaciers and mountain valleys due to its rugged Himalayan terrain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Kamet (7,756 m), <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">located in Uttarakhand, is the highest peak of the broader Zaskar Range<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mountains of the Zanskar Range are characterised by <\/span><b>barren slopes, deep valleys and steep gorges<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to extreme climatic conditions and erosion.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Zanskar Range Important Passes<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pensi La Pass (around 4,400 m) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an important pass connecting the Suru Valley of Kargil with the Zanskar Valley and is known as the gateway to Zanskar.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Shingo La (Shinku La) Pass <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(around 5,091 m) connects the Zanskar Valley with the Lahaul region of Himachal Pradesh.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These high-altitude passes play an important role in regional connectivity, tourism and strategic movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Zanskar Range Drainage System<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Zanskar River <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the main river of the region and forms an important tributary of the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/indus-river-system\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Indus River<\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Zanskar River is formed by the <\/span><b>confluence of the Doda River and the Lungnak River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> near Padum.
