It was established in 1975 under the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972. In 2009, it became a Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger. The sanctuary forms the core of the Achanakmar-Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve, which was notified in 2005 and included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves on 11 July 2012. It is one of the three tiger reserves in Chhattisgarh and plays a major role in conserving central India&#8217;s forest ecosystem.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary is known for its strategic location, rich forest landscape, tiger corridors, river systems and strong conservation importance.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Location: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sanctuary extends across Mungeli district in Chhattisgarh and Anuppur and Dindori districts in Madhya Pradesh.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Area:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It covers about 557.55 sq km of forest and lies around 50 km north of Mungeli near Amarkantak.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Legal Status: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was declared a <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/wildlife-sanctuaries-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>wildlife sanctuary<\/strong><\/a> in 1975 under the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/wildlife-protection-act\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/tiger-reserves-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tiger Reserve<\/a>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2009, it received Tiger Reserve status under <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/project-tiger-1973\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Project Tiger<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, strengthening tiger conservation in central India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/biosphere-reserve-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">Biosphere Reserve<\/a>: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sanctuary forms the 551.55 sq km core zone of the Achanakmar-Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve. The remaining 3,284.36 sq km serves as the buffer area across Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tiger Corridor: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achanakmar is connected to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/kanha-tiger-reserve-ktr\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Kanha Tiger Reserve<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through the Kanha-Achanakmar Corridor. It also supports tiger movement towards Bandhavgarh, making it an important wildlife dispersal route in central India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>River System: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Maniyari River flows through the centre of the reserve and supports wildlife throughout the year. The sanctuary is also located close to the origin of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/narmada-river-system\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Narmada<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/sone-river\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Son<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rivers near Amarkantak.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Landscape and Geography: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sanctuary lies within the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/maikal-range\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Maikal Hills<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Satpura region. The surrounding biosphere reserve includes parts of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/vindhya-range\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Vindhya<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/satpura-range\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Satpura<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ranges and forms a watershed between the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/arabian-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Arabian Sea<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bay-of-bengal\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Bay of Bengal<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> river systems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tribal Communities: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reserve is home to Baiga, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/particularly-vulnerable-tribal-groups-pvtgs\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG)<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, along with Gond and Yadav communities. Their traditional knowledge has long supported sustainable use of forest resources.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Conservation Importance: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biosphere reserve includes 416 villages and two urban settlements. The region supports healthy wildlife habitats because of dense vegetation, perennial rivers and continuous forest connectivity with neighbouring protected areas.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rich Flora: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Major tree species include Sal, Saja, Bija, Haldu, Teak, Tinsa, Dhawara, Lendia, Khamar and Bamboo.
