species across Northeast India.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Clouded Leopard Conservation Action Plan (CAP)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Clouded Leopard Conservation Action Plan (CAP)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b>India\u2019s first dedicated national strategy for conserving the Clouded Leopard.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prepared by the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/wildlife-institute-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wildlife Institute of India<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under the <\/span><b>Government of India\u2013Global Environment Facility (GEF)\u2013United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> initiative.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was released during the 91st meeting of the Standing Committee of the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/national-board-for-wildlife-nbwl\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Board for Wild Life<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> held at Coimbatore in July 2026.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Action Plan adopts a landscape-based approach that integrates habitat protection, scientific monitoring, technology, community participation and climate-resilient conservation to secure the species across Northeast India.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Clouded Leopard Conservation Action Plan (CAP) Key Features\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Clouded Leopard Conservation Action Plan provides a comprehensive framework for conserving the Clouded Leopard.\u00a0 Its key features include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Identifies 14 priority conservation landscapes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across Northeast India to focus conservation efforts in the species\u2019 key habitats.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Promotes habitat restoration and wildlife corridor conservation <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to reconnect fragmented forests and improve ecological connectivity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Includes the Clouded Leopard under the <\/span><b>Species Recovery Programme of the Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats (IDWH) Scheme<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, strengthening institutional support for conservation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introduces standardised <\/span><b>scientific monitoring<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: management and long-term habitat protection.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>About Clouded Leopard<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Clouded Leopard (Neofelis nebulosa)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of Asia\u2019s most evolutionarily distinct and least-studied wild cats. Belonging to the <\/span><b>genus Neofelis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is a separate species from the common leopard and is often regarded as an evolutionary link between the big and small cats.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Distribution<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Found across South and Southeast Asia. In India, it occurs mainly in the Northeastern States, inhabiting dense tropical and subtropical forests.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Habitat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Prefers evergreen and semi-evergreen forests but is also found in secondary forests, mangroves and Himalayan foothill forests up to about 2,700 m (9,000 ft).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Physical Features<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It has distinctive cloud-shaped markings, proportionately the longest canine teeth among all wild cats, short powerful legs, large paws, a long tail and specialised footpads for gripping branches.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Exceptional Climber<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Specialised ankle joints enable it to climb down trees headfirst, hang upside down from branches and move easily through the forest canopy, making it one of the most arboreal cats in the world.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Behaviour<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It is primarily solitary, nocturnal and crepuscular (most active at dawn and dusk). Although highly adapted to life in trees, most hunting takes place on the ground.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A carnivorous ambush predator that feeds on monkeys, gibbons, slow lorises, deer, wild pigs, birds and rodents.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reproduction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It attains sexual maturity at around 2 years of age. The gestation period is about 85-93 days, and females usually give birth to 1-5 cubs (commonly 2-3), with cubs becoming independent after about 1.5-2 years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Unique Characteristics<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It can open its jaws to nearly 100\u00b0, wider than any other wild cat, allowing it to capture relatively large prey.
