{"id":117617,"date":"2026-08-06T17:17:28","date_gmt":"2026-08-06T11:47:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=117617"},"modified":"2026-08-06T17:17:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-06T11:47:28","slug":"varsha-ashok-aglawe-becomes-first-woman-dg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/varsha-ashok-aglawe-becomes-first-woman-dg\/","title":{"rendered":"Varsha Ashok Aglawe Becomes First Woman DG of Geological Survey of India"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Varsha Ashok Aglawe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has assumed charge as the <\/span><b>54th Director General (DG) of the Geological Survey of India (GSI)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, becoming the <\/span><b>first woman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to head the country\u2019s premier geoscientific organisation in its 176-year history.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Varsha Ashok Aglawe<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Varsha Ashok Aglawe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a distinguished <\/span><b>geoscientist<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with over three decades of experience in geological research, mineral exploration and scientific administration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She <\/span><b>joined the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/geological-survey-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Geological Survey of India<\/b><\/a><b> (GSI) in 1992<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after beginning her career with the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before becoming the <\/span><b>54th Director General of GSI<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she served as Additional Director General and Head of Department, Eastern Region, Kolkata.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She has served in scientific and administrative roles across the Central, Northern and Eastern Regions of GSI, as well as at its Central Headquarters.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She has led multidisciplinary geoscientific programmes related to geological mapping, mineral exploration and Earth science research.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She is an <\/span><b>expert in palaeontology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the study of fossils) <\/span><b>and palynology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the study of pollen, spores and other microscopic organic remains).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She has <\/span><b>conducted significant research on Late Cretaceous-Palaeocene sediments, the K-T (Cretaceous-Tertiary) boundary, and the Satpura-Gondwana Basins<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She <\/span><b>identified the Salbardi-Ghorpend area<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in central India as a new dinosaur nesting site, making an important contribution to India\u2019s vertebrate palaeontology.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She <\/span><b>established a state-of-the-art Palynology Laboratory <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at GSI\u2019s Northern Region office in Lucknow, strengthening the organisation\u2019s research capabilities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She <\/span><b>collaborated with the University of Michigan Museum of Paleontology (USA) on international paleontological research<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and represented GSI at the Prospectors &amp;
