They have traditionally lived in forest, hill and remote regions of the state. Maharashtra has 36 districts and the largest tribal population is concentrated in the eastern forest belt of Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Bhandara, Gondia, Nagpur, Amravati and Yavatmal, along with the western hilly districts of Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nashik, Palghar and Thane. Their cultural diversity and traditional knowledge form an important part of the state&#8217;s social heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Tribes of Maharashtra<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A tribe is a social group that shares common ancestry, language, customs and cultural practices. In India, tribal communities notified under Article 342 of the Constitution are recognised as Scheduled Tribes (STs). Maharashtra has more than 50 tribal communities, with several classified as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). The state has 29 Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP) Offices for tribal welfare. Among these, Nashik, Kalwan, Taloda, Jawhar, Dahanu, Dhaarani, Kinwat, Pandharkavda, Gadchiroli, Aheri and Bhamragad are identified as the most sensitive tribal development areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>List of Major Tribes of Maharashtra 2026<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The major Tribes of Maharashtra mainly inhabit the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/western-ghats\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Western Ghats<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/satpura-range\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Satpura Range<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>Sahyadri Hills<\/strong> and eastern forest regions. They preserve distinct languages, customs, festivals and traditional occupations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Bhil<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is one of the largest tribal communities of Maharashtra.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Major sub groups include Bhilala, Vasava, Pawara, Kokna, Bhil Mavchi, Pardhi Bhil, Bhil Garasia, Bhil Gamit, Barda Bhil and Dhanka Bhil.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bhils mainly inhabit Dhule, Nandurbar, Nashik, Jalgaon, Ahmednagar and Pune.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They celebrate traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/harvest-festivals-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>harvest festivals<\/strong><\/a> and maintain strong <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/folk-dances-of-maharashtra\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>folk dance<\/strong><\/a> and archery traditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Gond<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maharashtra&#8217;s largest forest tribe includes Maria Gond, Raj Gond, Dorla Gond, Dhurve Gond, Pardhan Gond, Naikpod Gond and Khatola Gond.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are concentrated in Gadchiroli, Chandrapur, Gondia, Nagpur, Bhandara, Wardha and Yavatmal.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nature worship, clan based traditions and <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/fairs-and-festivals-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>festivals<\/strong><\/a> linked with agriculture remain central to Gond culture.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Kolam<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recognised PVTG in Maharashtra. Important groups include Bhil Korku, Halam Korku, Nihal Korku, Bharia Korku and Nahul Korku.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agriculture, forest resources and colourful community festivals shape their traditional lifestyle.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Warli<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Famous worldwide for <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/warli-painting\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Warli painting<\/strong><\/a>, an important tribal <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/indian-paintings\/\" target=\"_blank\">folk art<\/a><\/strong> using simple geometric designs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Major groups include Warli, Dhodi Warli, Kholcha Warli, Kudala Warli and Mokhada Warli.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They mainly reside in Palghar, Thane, Nashik and nearby hill regions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Mahadeo Koli<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Found across western Maharashtra, especially Nashik, Pune, Satara and Ahmednagar.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Important groups include Thakur Koli, Kadam Koli, Rathod Koli, Dhangar Koli and Dhuri Koli.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farming, hunting traditions and local village festivals remain significant.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Katkari<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also recognised as a <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/particularly-vulnerable-tribal-groups-pvtgs\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>PVTG<\/strong><\/a>. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Important groups include Rajkatkari, Dhor Kathkari, Son Kathkari, Toli Kathkari and Dhankar Kathkari.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are mainly distributed in Raigad, Palghar, Thane, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bamboo work, forest produce collection and seasonal labour support their livelihoods.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Thakar<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Major groups include Thakar, Thakar Vareli, Thakar Dhodia, Thakar Kholcha and Thakar Kudala.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are largely concentrated in western Maharashtra and continue traditional farming, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/folk-music-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>folk songs<\/strong><\/a> and religious celebrations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Dhangar<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Important groups include Hatkar Dhangar, Ahir Dhangar, Khutekar Dhangar, Khatik Dhangar and Gavli Dhangar.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many communities traditionally practise sheep and goat rearing, pastoralism and seasonal <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/migration-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>migration<\/strong><\/a> across Maharashtra.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Tribes of Maharashtra Significance<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Constitutional Recognition:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Scheduled Tribe status provides constitutional safeguards, reservation benefits, welfare programmes and focused development through tribal specific schemes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Geographical Distribution: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tribal communities are concentrated in eastern forests and western hills, making these regions important for <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/biodiversity-conservation\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>biodiversity conservation<\/strong><\/a> and balanced regional development.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Integrated Tribal Development: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maharashtra operates 29 ITDP Offices.
