{"id":11772,"date":"2023-06-07T02:50:58","date_gmt":"2023-06-06T21:20:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=11772"},"modified":"2025-03-30T05:22:13","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T23:52:13","slug":"gulf-of-mannar-marine-national-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/gulf-of-mannar-marine-national-park\/","title":{"rendered":"Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Designated as a Biosphere Reserve, the Gulf of Mannar is <strong>one of the biologically richest coastal regions in all of mainland of India<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is the <strong>first Marine Biosphere Reserve in the South and South East Asia<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: It is located 160 km between <strong>Dhanushkodi and Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This Marine Biosphere Reserve <strong>encompasses a chain of 21 islands<\/strong> (2 islands already submerged) and <strong>adjoining coral reefs off the coasts<\/strong> .<\/li>\n<li>Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park, <strong>established in 1980<\/strong>, boasts t<strong>hree surreal aquatic ecosystems<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>mangroves, seagrass, and coral reef.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Flora<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>The intertidal areas are <strong>dominated by mangroves belonging to the Rhizophora, Avicennia,<\/strong> Bruguiera genus.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Seagrass is another prolific species<\/strong>, about 12 species exist here.<\/li>\n<li><strong>About 150 species of seaweeds to are found in the waters<\/strong>. There is one endemic plant, a flowering herb called Pemphis acidula on the parklands.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fauna<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dugong, an endangered marine mammal<\/strong>, is the main attraction of the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park.<\/li>\n<li>It has recorded some <strong>117 species of hard Coral<\/strong>. It is home to different vulnerable whales like <strong>humpback whales, blue whales, fin whales, etc<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is Dugong?<\/h3>\n<p>The dugong is the only marine herbivorous mammal, depending largely on seagrass for food. The dugong\u2019s range extends to over 40 countries from East Africa to the Pacific.
