{"id":11780,"date":"2023-06-07T12:30:45","date_gmt":"2023-06-07T07:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=11780"},"modified":"2025-03-30T05:25:04","modified_gmt":"2025-03-29T23:55:04","slug":"what-are-defibrillators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-are-defibrillators\/","title":{"rendered":"What are Defibrillators?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Defibrillators:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Defibrillators are <strong>devices that send an electric pulse or shock to the heart to restore a normal heartbeat.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They are used to <strong>prevent or correct an arrhythmia<\/strong>, <strong>an uneven heartbeat<\/strong> that is too slow or too fast.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>If the heart suddenly stops, defibrillators can also help<\/strong> it beat again.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>There are three types of defibrillators: AEDs, ICDs, and WCDs<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Automated External Defibrillators (AED):<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>An AED is a l<strong>ightweight, battery-operated, portable device that checks the heart\u2019s rhythm and sends a shock to the heart <\/strong>to restore normal rhythm.<\/li>\n<li>The device is used to <strong>help people having cardiac arrest.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs):<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>ICDs are <strong>placed through surgery in the chest or stomach area<\/strong>, where the <strong>device can check for arrhythmias<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Arrhythmias <strong>can interrupt the flow of blood from your heart to the rest of your body o<\/strong>r cause your heart to stop.<\/li>\n<li>The ICD <strong>sends a shock to restore a normal heart rhythm<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wearable Cardioverter Defibrillators (WCDs):<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>WCDs <strong>have sensors that attach to the skin.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They are <strong>connected by wires to a unit that checks your heart\u2019s rhythm and delivers shocks when needed.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Like an ICD, the <strong>WCD can deliver low- and high-energy shocks<\/strong>. The device has a belt <strong>attached to a vest that is worn under your clothes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Your <strong>provider fits the device to your size<\/strong>. Your heart may be beating too fast when you\u2019re at rest or just not beating in a regular pattern, for example. Arrhythmias range from harmless to serious, with symptoms and without.
